What is Alloy 310?

Alloy 310 (UNS S31000) is an austenitic stainless steel designed for high-temperature corrosion resistance. Alloy 310S (UNS S31008) is a low-carbon version that improves weldability and reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during welding. Alloy 310H (UNS S31009) has a higher carbon content, providing superior creep resistance at high temperatures. In most cases, the grain size and carbon content of the sheet can meet the requirements of both 310S and 310H.

What are the properties of 310 stainless steel?

310 stainless steel contains 25% chromium and 20% nickel, giving it extremely high oxidation and corrosion resistance. The 310S grade is a low-carbon version, making it less prone to embrittlement and sensitization during use. The high chromium and moderate nickel content makes these steels suitable for reducing sulfur atmospheres containing hydrogen sulfide. They are widely used in moderate carburizing atmospheres, such as those common in petrochemical environments. For more demanding carburizing atmospheres, other heat-resistant alloys should be selected.

310 stainless steel composition

310 stainless steel is a high-temperature austenitic stainless steel with a composition of approximately 25% chromium, 20% nickel, and the remainder iron, with a maximum carbon content of 0.25%. The low-carbon type, 310S, has a maximum carbon content of 0.08% and is often used in applications requiring easier machining.

Corrosion Resistance:

310/310S steel is generally not used in corrosive liquid environments, although its high chromium and nickel content makes it more corrosion resistant than 304 steel. This alloy does not contain molybdenum, therefore its resistance to pitting corrosion is relatively poor.

What is the density of 310 stainless steel?

The density of 310 stainless steel is approximately 0.285 to 0.290 lb/in³ or 7.84 to 8.03 g/cm³. This value can vary slightly depending on the specific alloy composition and temperature.

What is the temperature range for 310 stainless steel?

310 stainless steel has a melting point range of approximately 1354-1402℃ (2470-2555℉), making it suitable for high-temperature applications. Under continuous use, its oxidation resistance can reach approximately 1050℃ (1922℉). Its main limitation lies in the formation of the σ phase, which can cause the material to become embrittled between 650-900℃ (1202-1652℉).
