Stainless Steel coils Production Process
The production process of stainless steel coils is a continuous and highly controlled metallurgical workflow. Raw materials are first melted in an electric arc furnace (EAF), then refined in an argon-oxygen decarburization (AOD) converter to reduce the carbon content to below 0.03% (e.g., low-carbon steel grades such as 304L and 316L). The molten steel is continuously cast into billets typically 150–220 mm thick, then reheated to 1100–1250°C for hot rolling, achieving a thickness reduction of up to 95%, resulting in hot-rolled coils (Grade 1 finish). For precision applications, cold rolling at room temperature allows for thickness tolerances of ±0.01–0.03 mm, yielding 2B or BA finishes. Intermediate annealing at approximately 1050–1150°C, followed by pickling, removes internal stress and scale, ensuring optimal corrosion resistance.

304 316 430 Stainless steel coils supplier - GNEE
GNEE maintains a large inventory of standard specification stainless steel coils, including 304, 316, and 430 series, in warehouses located in Anyang, Tianjin, and near major ports throughout the year. The shortest delivery time can be reduced to 7-15 days.
Our slitting and cut-to-length processing are completed using precision slitting lines and shearing machines, with an accuracy of up to ±0.01mm. Every batch of raw materials must undergo strict inspection before shipment. We provide original Mill Test Certificates (MTC) and support independent inspections by third-party organizations such as SGS, BV, and TUV to ensure that the chemical composition and mechanical properties fully comply with international standards.

Quality Control & Testing
Chemical Analysis (PMI Test): Using a handheld or laboratory spectrometer.
Mechanical Property Testing:
Tensile Strength: Ensures the material does not easily break under stress.
Yield Strength: Measures the limit before permanent deformation.
Dimensional Inspection: Uses high-precision micrometers and calipers for accurate measurements of tolerance, width, inner diameter (ID), and outer diameter (OD).
Surface Quality Inspection: Inspects for scratches, pits, creases, or color variations to ensure a flawless surface (2B, BA, No.4, etc.).
Professional Seaworthy Packaging
1. Packaging Layers
Anti-Rust Protection: Surface coated with a light rust-preventive oil (optional) and covered with rust-resistant paper (VCI paper).
Waterproof Layer: Inner layer wrapped with high-strength plastic waterproof tarpaulin to prevent salt spray corrosion during sea transport.
Core & Edge Protection:
Inner/Outer Edge Protectors: Use metal or plastic corner protectors to prevent edge curling and deformation caused by impacts during loading and unloading.
Inner Diameter (ID) Core Protection: Internal support using metal tubing.
Outer Shield: Outer layer covered with galvanized steel skin or cardboard, and secured longitudinally and laterally with high-strength steel strapping (usually 3x3 or 4x4).
Pallletization: Placed on fumigated wooden pallets or iron pallets and reinforced with support.
2. Packaging Style
Eye to Sky (Vertical Packaging): Eyes facing upwards, suitable for thinner and narrower precision strips.
Eye to Wall (Horizontal Packaging): Eyes horizontal, the most common logistics method for large stainless steel coils, facilitating forklift and lifting.

FAQ
Q: What is the difference between 304 and 201 stainless steel coils?
A: 304 stainless steel coil belongs to the austenitic stainless steel family, with approximately 8% nickel and 18% chromium content. Its corrosion resistance is significantly better than 201 stainless steel. 201 stainless steel reduces cost by increasing manganese content and lowering nickel content, making it more economical but also more prone to rust in humid, acidic, alkaline, or coastal environments.
Q: Why Is 316L Stainless Steel Coil Much More Expensive Than 304?
A: 316L stainless steel coil contains an additional 2%-3% molybdenum (Mo) element and has a lower carbon content (≤0.03%) compared to 304. The corrosion resistance service life of 316L is typically 2-3 times longer than that of 304. Since molybdenum is a high-cost alloying element, the raw material cost of 316L itself is about 35%-50% higher than 304. The price gap may widen further during periods of rising nickel and molybdenum prices.
Q: What Is the Thickness Tolerance of Stainless Steel Coil? Is It Positive or Negative Tolerance?
A: The thickness tolerance of stainless steel coils is generally produced according to ASTM A480, JIS G4305, or EN standards. For common cold rolled stainless steel coils, the tolerance is usually ±0.03mm for 0.5mm thickness, ±0.05mm for 1.0mm thickness, and ±0.08mm to ±0.10mm for thicknesses above 3.0mm.
We mainly adopt negative tolerance control, meaning the actual thickness is slightly lower than the nominal thickness but still within the allowable standard range. For example, a nominal thickness of 1.0mm may have an actual thickness of 0.95-0.98mm. For applications such as laser cutting, pressure vessels, or precision stamping, positive tolerance or zero tolerance materials can also be supplied, although production costs will be relatively higher.
Q: What Is the Inner Diameter of Stainless Steel Coils?
A: The common inner diameters are 508mm and 610mm, and the selection should match the customer’s decoiler equipment requirements.
Q: Can Your Coils Be Slit? What Is the Minimum Width?
A: Yes, we provide stainless steel coil slitting services and can customize the width, tolerance, and packaging according to customer requirements. The standard slitting width range is 10mm-1500mm, while ultra narrow strips can be slit down to 8mm-10mm minimum width. Width tolerance can generally be controlled within ±0.05mm to ±0.10mm. For high precision requirements, we can also provide tension leveling, protective film lamination, and anti-scratch packaging services.
Q: Are Stainless Steel Coils Supplied with Mill Edge or Slit Edge?
A: Both edge conditions are available. Cold rolled stainless steel coils are typically supplied with slit edges, while hot rolled coils are more commonly supplied with mill edges. The width tolerance of slit edge products can usually be controlled within ±0.1mm, which also helps reduce burrs and scratch risks during processing.
Q: Do Stainless Steel Coils Come with Protective Film (PVC/Laser Film)? Single Side or Double Side?
A: Yes, protective films are available, including PVC protective film, PE protective film, and laser film. Standard shipments are usually supplied with single side film protection, while double side film protection can also be provided upon request, especially for mirror finish sheets, high-end decorative panels, and laser cutting materials. The protective film thickness is generally between 50μm and 100μm. For export orders, branded film, customized logo film, and UV-resistant protective film are also available.
Q: How Much Does a Full Coil Usually Weigh? Can My Forklift Handle It?
A: Large stainless steel coils usually weigh between 8 tons and 20 tons, while slit small coils may range from 50kg to 2 tons. Before placing an order, the lifting capacity and forklift load capacity at the receiving site should be confirmed.
