If you are looking for the difference between SCS13 and SUS304 stainless steel, you are likely sourcing austenitic stainless steels for casting or fabrication purposes. Although both grades are based on the same Cr-Ni (18-8) stainless system, there are important distinctions between them in manufacturing process, mechanical properties, and usage scenarios.

What is SCS13 stainless steel?

SCS13 stainless steel is a cast austenitic stainless steel grade equivalent to 304 stainless steel (SUS304), prized for its general corrosion resistance, strength, and machinability. It is widely used in industrial applications such as valves, pumps, and construction materials for its ability to handle corrosive environments like industrial and pure water, wastewater, and pulp.

What is SUS304 stainless steel?

SUS304 is an austenitic stainless steel that conforms to Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). It has properties comparable to common ASTM 304 or 18-8 stainless steel and is widely used in kitchenware, food and beverage equipment, and other applications requiring a balance of strength, durability, and corrosion resistance.

Are SCS13 and SUS304 the same?

Not exactly the same. SCS13 is a cast version of SUS304. They have similar chemical compositions, but SCS13 is a cast structure, while SUS304 is a forged (rolled) structure.

Difference Between SCS13 and SUS304 Stainless Steel

Grade Standard Type Form Applications
SCS13 JIS G5121 Austenitic Stainless Steel (Cast) Castings, valve bodies, pump housings Chemical, marine, and pressure equipment
SUS304 JIS G4303 / G4304 Austenitic Stainless Steel (Wrought) Plate, Sheet, Bar, Pipe Food processing, construction, piping, machinery

In simple terms: SCS13 is the cast equivalent of SUS304. They share a similar composition but differ in structure and performance due to different forming processes (casting vs. forging/rolling).

Corrosion Resistance and Heat Resistance

Corrosion Resistance:
Both SCS13 and SUS304 have similar chromium and nickel content, providing excellent resistance to oxidation, acid, and alkali corrosion.
However, SCS13 may have more micro-porosity and inclusions due to casting, making surface finish and passivation more important.

Heat Resistance:
Both grades perform well up to 870°C (1600°F) in intermittent service.
For continuous service or higher temperatures, a stabilized version like SUS321 or SUS316Ti is recommended.

SCS13 vs SUS304 stainless steel :Applications

SCS13 SUS304
Pump and valve bodies Tanks, pipes, and heat exchangers
Impellers and flanges Food and beverage equipment
Chemical and marine castings Architectural panels and kitchenware
High-temperature cast parts Pressure vessels and tubing

Are SCS13 and SUS304 interchangeable?

Generally, they are interchangeable in terms of corrosion resistance. However, for applications requiring high formability, polishing, or welding, SUS304 is recommended.

Which is more suitable for pressure equipment?

SUS304 is commonly used for pressure vessels and storage tanks due to its higher ductility and uniform microstructure.
