What is the difference between 1.4841 and 1.4845 stainless steel?
What material is 1.4845 equivalent to?
310S stainless steel grade, which is also know as 1.4845 or 310s is a stainless grade which is commonly used in very high temperature envireoments. This grade is written as 1.4845 or X8CrNi25-21 according to EN norm and it is written as UNS S31008 according to UNS norm.
What is 1.4841 material equivalent to?
AISI 310 is an austenitic stainless steel, also known as 1.4841, BS 314S25, Inox 310 and X15CrNiSi25-21. The material is characterised by good heat resistance and strength at high temperatures.
What is 1.4542 stainless steel equivalent to?
1.4542 stainless steel is equivalent to 17-4 PH, AISI 630, and UNS S17400. It is a precipitation-hardening, martensitic stainless steel known for its high strength, toughness, and good corrosion resistance.
1.4841 vs 1.4845 stainless steel: Key Difference
1.4845 (310S) is a low-carbon version of 1.4841 (310). It offers better weldability and less risk of sensitization, while 1.4841 performs slightly better under extreme heat exposure.
| Grade | EN Number | AISI Equivalent | UNS Number | Main Feature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.4841 | X15CrNiSi25-21 | AISI 310 | UNS S31000 | Excellent oxidation resistance up to 1100°C |
| 1.4845 | X8CrNi25-21 | AISI 310S | UNS S31008 | Lower carbon for better weldability and less carbide precipitation |
1.4841 vs 1.4845 stainless steel: Chemical Composition
Both contain high Cr and Ni for oxidation resistance, but 1.4845 has less carbon, improving weldability and resistance to intergranular corrosion.
| Element | 1.4841 (AISI 310) | 1.4845 (AISI 310S) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.20% | ≤ 0.08% |
| Chromium (Cr) | 24.0–26.0% | 24.0–26.0% |
| Nickel (Ni) | 19.0–22.0% | 19.0–22.0% |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.5% | ≤ 1.5% |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 2.0% | ≤ 2.0% |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.015% | ≤ 0.015% |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.045% | ≤ 0.045% |
1.4841 vs 1.4845 stainless steel: Mechanical Properties
| Property | 1.4841 | 1.4845 |
|---|---|---|
| Density | 7.9 g/cm³ | 7.9 g/cm³ |
| Tensile Strength | 500–750 MPa | 500–700 MPa |
| Yield Strength | ≥ 210 MPa | ≥ 200 MPa |
| Elongation (A5) | ≥ 40% | ≥ 40% |
| Hardness (HB) | ≤ 215 | ≤ 200 |
1.4841 vs 1.4845 stainless steel: Temperature & Heat Resistance
| Condition | 1.4841 | 1.4845 |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Continuous Service Temperature (Air) | 1100°C | 1050°C |
| Short-term Exposure | Up to 1150°C | Up to 1100°C |
| Scaling Resistance | Excellent | Excellent |
Key Note:If your component is exposed to continuous high heat (>1050°C), choose 1.4841.If your component requires welding or cyclic heating, choose 1.4845 (310S) to avoid carbide precipitation.
Corrosion & Oxidation Resistance
Both 1.4841 and 1.4845 perform well in oxidizing atmospheres, carburizing environments, and thermal cycling.However:1.4845 (310S) offers better protection against intergranular corrosion after welding.1.4841 (310) resists oxidation and scaling slightly better in dry air above 1050°C.
Avoid prolonged exposure in reducing or sulfur-containing atmospheres, as both grades are not ideal for those environments.
Are 1.4841 and 1.4845 magnetic?
Both are non-magnetic in the annealed condition but may become slightly magnetic after cold work.
