304H Stainless Steel: High-Carbon Strengthened Grade for High-Temperature Applications321 (UNS S32100) Stainless Steel: The Titanium-Stabilized High-Temp Alloy316Ti vs 316L Stainless Steel: Choosing Between Stabilization and Low Carbon

Key Properties for Extreme Temps

Composition: High Chromium (25%) & Nickel (20%) for superior oxidation/corrosion resistance.

Temperature Range: Up to 1150°C in continuous service, 1040°C intermittent.

Oxidation Resistance: Forms a tenacious scale, good against thermal cycling.

Corrosion: Resists H₂S, moderately carburizing atmospheres, and sulfidation.

Mechanical Strength: Significant strength reduction at high temps (e.g., ~60% tensile loss at 700°C); creep strength is excellent.

Cryogenic: Good toughness, though other grades are usually preferred.

Ideal Applications

Furnaces: Radiant tubes, muffles, annealing covers, burners, doors, fans, walking beams.

Petrochemical: Tube hangers, recuperators, catalytic recovery, flare stacks.

Power Generation: Coal gasifier internals, pulverized coal burners.

Cement/Ceramics: Rotary kilns, windboxes, burner shields, feeders.

Waste Incineration: Components for waste-to-energy systems.

Considerations for Use

Thermal Shock: Not for frequent liquid quenching; suffers from shock.

Carbide Precipitation: Avoid continuous use in 425-860°C range if future aqueous corrosion resistance is needed.

Fabrication: Low carbon (310S) improves weldability and formability, but reduces high-temp strength slightly.

Post-Weld: Clean surfaces thoroughly to maintain the passive layer; use stainless tools.
