Key Properties & Benefits
High Strength & Hardness: Responds well to heat treatment (hardening/tempering) to achieve high tensile strength (≥440 MPa) and hardness (up to ~HRC 45).
Wear Resistance: High carbon content forms chromium carbides, providing excellent resistance to abrasion and edge retention, notes Ambica Steels, making it great for tools and moving parts.
Corrosion Resistance: Offers good protection in normal atmospheres, steam, freshwater, and mild chemicals, but less than austenitic grades like SUS304, according to BBN Steel, this AZoM article, and this BBN Steel article.
Heat Resistance: Maintains properties at moderately elevated temperatures.
Magnetic: It's magnetic in both annealed and hardened states.
Common Applications
Mechanical Parts: Pump/valve components, shafts, fasteners, springs, bolts, bushings, turbine blades.
Tools & Cutlery: Knife blades, surgical/medical instruments.
Automotive/Aerospace: Exhaust components, high-temperature engine parts.
