1. Definition & Basic Properties

Angle steel, also termed L-shaped steel or angle iron, is a hot-rolled or cold-formed structural steel profile with two perpendicular legs forming a 90° angle. It is classified into:

Equal-angle steel: Legs of identical length (e.g., 50×50×5 mm).

Unequal-angle steel: Legs of differing lengths (e.g., 100×75×6 mm).

Key Materials: Carbon steel (e.g., ASTM A36, EN S235), stainless steel (e.g., 304/316), or galvanized coatings for corrosion resistance.

2. Manufacturing Standards & Specifications

Globally recognized standards include:

ASTM (USA): A36 (general use), A572 (high-strength).

EN (Europe): EN 10025 (S235JR-S355JR).

GB/T (China): GB/T 706 (hot-rolled), GB/T 6723 (cold-formed).

Size Range: Leg widths from 20 mm to 250 mm; thicknesses from 3 mm to 30 mm.

3. Key Applications

Angle steel is widely utilized in:

Construction: Beams, columns, and bracing for buildings/bridges.

Infrastructure: Transmission towers, railings, and conveyor systems.

Industry: Machinery frames, shelving, and vehicle chassis.

Decorative: Stainless steel angles for modern furniture/architecture.

4. Advantages

Structural Efficiency: High strength-to-weight ratio for load-bearing.

Versatility: Easy to weld, bolt, or cut onsite.

Cost-Effectiveness: Low material waste and competitive pricing.

5. Additional Notes

Sustainability: Recyclable and often reused in green construction.

Innovation: Laser-cut angles for precision engineering projects.

Format: Structured for clarity, combining technical details with practical applications. Adjusted to 5 key sections for conciseness.

Production Processes

Hot-rolling Process: The steel billet is heated and then rolled by a rolling mill. This process is cost-effective and efficient but results in a relatively rough surface. It is commonly used in ordinary building structures.

Cold-rolling Process: Cold-rolled steel strips are used at room temperature and formed through cold bending.

Specifications and Dimensions

Domestic angle steel is sized from No. 2 to No. 20, where the number indicates the side length in centimeters. For the same type of angle steel, there are usually 2 - 7 different side thicknesses. Generally, those with a side length of 12.5 cm or more are classified as large angle steel, those between 12.5 cm and 5 cm are medium angle steel, and those with a side length of less than 5 cm are small angle steel.
