Overview
1.4401 is a high-quality European standard austenitic stainless steel, corresponding to AISI 316, with the key addition of 2.00-3.00% molybdenum that greatly enhances its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride-containing environments. It contains 16.00-18.00% chromium and 10.00-14.00% nickel, forming a stable face-centered cubic austenitic structure that is non-magnetic after annealing. This grade exhibits excellent ductility, cold forming capability, and weldability, requiring no complex preheating or post-weld treatment for most applications. Compared to 1.4301, it offers superior performance in seawater, salt mist, and mild chemical environments, making it the preferred material for moderate corrosive conditions in European industrial sectors.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.08, Si ≤ 1.00, Mn ≤ 2.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Cr: 16.00-18.00, Ni: 10.00-14.00, Mo: 2.00-3.00
Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)
Tensile Strength (Rm): ≥ 520 MPa; Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 205 MPa; Elongation (A): ≥ 40%; Brinell Hardness (HB): ≤ 187
Core Advantages
Molybdenum addition significantly improves resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion; meets strict European EN standards for quality control; non-magnetic and highly ductile for versatile forming; reliable weldability with minimal post-processing; balanced mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.
Applications
Coastal architectural structures in Europe, marine hardware, chemical pressure vessels, food and pharmaceutical equipment, pulp and paper machinery, and water treatment systems.
Equivalent Grades
AISI 316, UNS S31600, STS316, SUS316, GB 06Cr17Ni12Mo2
