What Is 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel?

2205 (S32205 / 1.4462) is the most widely‑used standard duplex stainless steel in industry. Its metallographic structure consists of approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite in balanced proportion, combining the high toughness of austenitic steel with the high strength and stress‑corrosion resistance of ferritic steel. Reinforced by high‑chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen alloying, it achieves a PREN value of 34‑36, delivering far superior resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion compared with 316L austenitic stainless steel.

The yield strength of 2205 is roughly twice that of 316L. Under equal pressure‑bearing conditions, it allows effective reduction of structural wall thickness to realize lightweight design, cost reduction and efficiency improvement. It exhibits outstanding corrosion resistance against seawater, salt‑containing media, weak acids and flue‑gas desulfurization environments, and is widely applied in marine engineering, oil‑gas equipment, chemical fluid systems and environmental‑protection desulfurization units.

Key Characteristics of 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel

1. What is the biggest corrosion advantage of 2205 duplex stainless steel?

2205 duplex stainless steel has excellent chloride corrosion resistance. With the composite alloying design of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen, its PREN value reaches 34-36. It has far better pitting and crevice corrosion resistance than 316L stainless steel, and can withstand seawater and high-salt corrosive media, which is very suitable for marine engineering, seawater desalination and other high-chloride working conditions.

2. Does 2205 duplex steel have cost advantages in engineering application?

It has significant cost advantages. The yield strength of 2205 is about twice that of 316L austenitic stainless steel. Under the same pressure-bearing working conditions, the wall and plate thickness can be reduced, which effectively lowers equipment weight and raw material consumption, saving engineering costs. Meanwhile, its lower nickel content makes it less affected by nickel price fluctuations with higher cost stability.

3. How is the stress corrosion resistance of 2205 duplex stainless steel?

2205 has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Its unique duplex microstructure of 50% austenite and 50% ferrite can effectively resist the superimposed damage of chloride ions, corrosive media and mechanical stress, solving the common failure problem of stress corrosion cracking of ordinary austenitic stainless steel.

4. Does 2205 duplex stainless steel have good weldability?

It features good weldability and can be welded conventionally. The welded joint can stably maintain a duplex microstructure with reliable welding performance. Only reasonable control of welding heat input is required during construction, and solution heat treatment after welding is not needed under conventional working conditions, simplifying the construction process and improving efficiency.

5.What general corrosion environments can 2205 adapt to?

2205 has excellent uniform corrosion resistance and good resistance to various weak acids, organic acids and salt media. It is widely applicable to conventional corrosive working conditions such as chemical production, flue gas desulfurization and environmental protection equipment with a wide range of applications.

FAQ

1.What is the main difference between 2205 duplex steel and 316L stainless steel?

2205 is duplex‑phase (austenite + ferrite). Its yield strength is about twice that of 316L, with much better resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress‑corrosion cracking. 316L is fully austenitic, better for general mild‑corrosion conditions without high‑chloride stress risk. 2205 is preferred for seawater, brine and high‑chloride working environments.

2.What service temperature range is suitable for 2205 duplex stainless steel?

A: Recommended service temperature:‑50 ℃ ~ 280 ℃. Long‑term operation above 300 ℃ shall be avoided, as brittle intermetallic phases will precipitate and cause material embrittlement. It is also not fit for ultra‑low‑temperature service due to ferrite‑phase brittleness.

3.Can 2205 duplex steel be welded? Is post‑weld heat treatment required?

It has good weldability. Welding heat input must be well‑controlled to maintain balanced austenite‑ferrite ratio at weld joints. Post‑weld solution annealing is generally unnecessary for ordinary projects; critical high‑risk projects shall follow project specifications.
