316 Stainless Steel & the Benefits of Molybdenum

316 (UNS S31600) is an austenitic stainless steel. Compared with 304 grade, it contains 2.0‑2.5 % molybdenum (Mo), which is its key alloying element.

Key benefits brought by molybdenum:

1.Improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion

Molybdenum promotes a more stable passive surface film, greatly resisting chloride‑induced attack. It reduces risks of pitting and crevice corrosion for salt spray, seawater and chlorine‑containing chemical media.

2.Better resistance to reducing acids

Superior corrosion performance over 304 in phosphoric acid, acetic acid and dilute sulfuric acid environments.

3.Enhanced high‑temperature creep resistance

Molybdenum strengthens the matrix, delivering higher creep strength than 304 under elevated‑temperature service conditions.

316 vs 304:Comparison of Molybdenum Content and Service Temperature

316's molybdenum content gives it better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in saltwater and chloride-laden environments. In general atmospheric and mild chemical conditions, 304 performs well; for marine, chemical and pharmaceutical duty, 316 is the more reliable choice.

316 can operate continuously at up to about 870 C (1600 F) in oxidizing environments from an oxidation-resistance standpoint. For pressure-retaining design, however, allowable stresses follow the governing code (for example ASME B31.3), which typically limits service temperature well below this - always confirm the design temperature against the applicable code.

FAQ

1.What is the difference between 316 and 316L?

The main difference is carbon content. 316: C ≤0.08%; 316L low‑carbon grade with C ≤0.03%, minimizing intergranular corrosion after welding. 316L is preferred for piping projects. Both grades contain molybdenum for better chloride resistance and have similar mechanical properties.

2.Why is 316 better than 304?
316 contains molybdenum (2.0‑2.5%) for superior pitting / crevice corrosion resistance against salt spray, seawater and certain acids. 304 without molybdenum is suitable for normal atmosphere and fresh water, and prone to corrosion under chloride exposure. 316 costs more than 304

3.Is 316 stainless steel magnetic?

316 is normally non‑magnetic in solution‑annealed condition. Slight magnetism may occur after cold working or bending, which is normal and does not indicate material defect.
