Description

321 is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel, designed to eliminate intergranular corrosion and enhance high-temperature stability. It is similar to 304 in chromium-nickel content (17.0-19.0% Cr, 9.0-12.0% Ni), with the addition of 0.15-0.40% titanium- which binds with carbon to prevent chromium carbide precipitation during welding and high-temperature exposure. Unlike 304 and 304L, 321 offers superior intergranular corrosion resistance and creep strength at elevated temperatures (up to 800°C), making it suitable for high-heat welded components. It remains non-magnetic at room temperature, has good formability and weldability, and is widely used in applications where post-weld corrosion resistance and high-temperature performance are critical-such as aerospace, automotive, and industrial heating systems.

Chemical Composition (wt%)

C ≤ 0.08, Cr: 17.00-19.00, Ni: 9.00-12.00, Ti: 0.15-0.40, Mn ≤ 2.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength ≥ 515 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 205 MPa, Elongation ≥ 40%, Hardness ≤ 201 HB

Advantages

Titanium-stabilized to prevent sensitization; superior intergranular corrosion resistance vs. 304; good high-temperature creep strength; non-magnetic; excellent weldability and formability; suitable for high-heat welded components.

Applications

Aerospace components, automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers, boiler parts, furnace components, and high-temperature welded structures.

Equivalent Grades

AISI 321, UNS S32100, EN 1.4878, GB 06Cr18Ni10Ti
