Description
Grade 316H is the high-carbon variant of Grade 316, engineered to combine the chloride corrosion resistance of 316 with enhanced high-temperature strength and creep resistance. With a carbon range of 0.04-0.10%, it outperforms 316 and 316L in long-term service at temperatures above 500°C, while retaining the molybdenum-enhanced corrosion protection that makes the 316 series ideal for harsh environments. Unlike 304H, 316H offers superior resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, making it suitable for high-temperature applications in corrosive settings-such as petrochemical plants and power generation facilities. It remains non-magnetic at room temperature, has good weldability, and provides reliable mechanical performance under sustained thermal stress, making it a specialized solution for high-heat, corrosive environments.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C: 0.04-0.10, Cr: 16.00-18.50, Ni: 10.00-14.00, Mo: 2.00-3.00, Mn ≤ 2.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 520 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 205 MPa, Elongation ≥ 40%, Hardness ≤ 215 HB
Advantages
Superior high-temperature creep strength vs. 316/316L; excellent chloride corrosion resistance; good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures; non-magnetic; weldable; suitable for high-heat, corrosive pressure components.
Applications
High-temperature chemical piping, petrochemical pressure vessels, boiler tubes, heat exchangers, power generation equipment, and high-heat corrosive industrial systems.
Equivalent Grades
AISI 316H, UNS S31609, EN 1.4406, GB 07Cr17Ni12Mo2, SUS316H
