What is SUS316L?

It's a low-carbon version of 316 stainless steel, with the "L" signifying low carbon.

It contains molybdenum, enhancing resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride environments.

Why Low Carbon Matters for Welding

Prevents Sensitization: When heated during welding, standard 316 can form chromium carbides at grain boundaries, depleting chromium and creating susceptible areas for corrosion (weld decay).

Maximized Corrosion Resistance: The low carbon in 316L minimizes carbide formation, maintaining corrosion resistance throughout the weld zone in its as-welded condition.

Key Benefits

Superior Weldability: Better than 316 for heavy-gauge welded components.

Enhanced Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding.

Versatile Performance: Offers good strength and toughness from cryogenic to elevated temperatures.
