What is the 1.4507 material?

Material 1.4507 (also known as X2CrNiMoCuN25-6-3) is a high-performance super duplex stainless steel, commonly known by trade names such as Ferralium 255 or Alloy F255. Unlike conventional super duplex steels, Alloy 1.4507 contains a significant addition of copper-a feature that fundamentally enhances its corrosion resistance in chloride-containing media and strongly acidic solutions.

1.4507 material Equivalents

The material 1.4507 is defined under the EN 10088-3 standard for stainless steels. In international markets, it is most frequently specified alongside its American counterparts to ensure material traceability.

Standard Designation / Grade
EN Number 1.4507
EN Name X2CrNiMoCuN25-6-3
UNS (ASTM) S32520 / S32550
ASTM A240 Grade F61

Chemical Composition (Weight %)

The precise balance of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen provides the "Super Duplex" status, while the specific copper addition differentiates 1.4507 from other 25% Cr alloys. Values are based on the EN 10088-3 specification.

C Si Mn Ni P S Cr Mo N Cu
max 0.03 max 0.7 max 2 6 - 8 max 0.035 max 0.015 24 - 26 3 - 4 0.2 - 0.3 1 - 2.5

Mechanical Properties

1.4507 delivers a combination of high yield strength and high fracture toughness. Its duplex microstructure (approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite) provides resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC).

Property (at Room Temp) Min. Value / Range
Yield Strength (Rp0.2) ≥ 550 MPa
Tensile Strength (Rm) 750 – 1000 MPa
Elongation (A5) ≥ 25%
Hardness (Brinell) ≤ 270 HBW
Pitting Resistance (PREN) ≥ 40

Duplex 2205 vs. Super Duplex Alloy F255

Understanding where 1.4507 sits within the duplex family is critical for material selection in engineering projects.

Grade Type EN / UNS PREN (Typical) Primary Advantage
Duplex 2205 1.4462 / S32205 ~35 Standard corrosion resistance, cost-effective.
Super Duplex 2507 1.4410 / S32750 ~42 High nitrogen for excellent chloride resistance.
Super Duplex Cu+ 1.4507 / S32550 40 – 43 Enhanced resistance to non-oxidizing acids (Cu).

Ferralium 255 stainless steel  Applications

Due to its specialized chemistry, 1.4507 is the preferred choice for applications where both high pressure and chemical aggression are present:

Chemical & Petrochemical: Components for sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and organic acid processing.

Marine & Offshore: Seawater systems, desalination plants (RO units), and firewater piping.

Oil & Gas: Downhole equipment, subsea manifolds, and flowlines where chloride stress corrosion is a risk.

Pulp & Paper: Digester linings and bleaching equipment handling aggressive chemicals.

1.4507 stianless steel Welding and Fabrication

Fabrication of 1.4507 requires attention to the phase balance. Welding should be performed using filler metals with slightly higher nickel content (e.g., 25 9 4 Cu L) to compensate for the faster ferrite formation during cooling. It is essential to control heat input to prevent the precipitation of intermetallic phases like sigma (σ), which can occur between 600°C and 1000°C and lead to embrittlement.

FAQ

1. Is 1.4507 the same as Alloy 2507?
Not exactly. While both are super duplex steels with 25% chromium, 1.4507 (UNS S32550) specifically contains 1.0%–2.5% copper. Standard Alloy 2507 (1.4410 / S32750) typically has much lower copper (max 0.5%).

2. Why is Copper added to 1.4507?
Copper significantly improves the material's resistance to non-oxidizing acids, particularly sulfuric acid at various concentrations, making it more versatile in chemical plants than copper-free super duplex steels.

3. Can 1.4507 be used at high temperatures?
Like all duplex steels, 1.4507 is generally restricted to temperatures below 250°C to 300°C (482°F to 572°F) to avoid "475°C embrittlement" and the formation of brittle phases.
