1.4509 stainless steel, commonly known as 439 or UNS S43035, is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel designed to offer improved corrosion resistance and weldability compared to standard 430 grades. With its enhanced resistance to intergranular corrosion and good formability, it is widely used in automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers, and decorative applications where cost-effectiveness and moderate corrosion resistance are key. Its stabilization with titanium and niobium makes it particularly suitable for welded applications.

This stabilized ferritic grade is standardized under key international systems.

Standard Equivalent Grade
EN (Europe) 1.4509
ASTM/AISI (USA) 439, UNS S43035
JIS (Japan) SUS439
KS (Korea) STS439

Titanium is added to stabilize the material and prevent sensitization during welding and high-temperature exposure.

Key Characteristics and Applications of 1.4509 / 439

Good Corrosion Resistance in Mild Environments: Performs well in indoor and automotive exhaust environments, with better resistance to intergranular corrosion than unstabilized ferritic grades due to titanium stabilization.

Excellent Weldability: The titanium stabilization minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, making it suitable for welded assemblies without post-weld heat treatment, unlike standard 430.

High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance: Good resistance to oxidation and scaling at elevated temperatures up to about 800°C, suitable for exhaust system components.

Magnetic and Cost-Effective: Strongly magnetic and more economical than nickel-containing austenitic grades, offering a balance of performance and cost.

Primary Applications:

Automotive Exhaust Systems: Mufflers, catalytic converter housings, tailpipes, exhaust manifolds, and heat shields.

Heat Exchangers: Components in automotive and HVAC systems requiring good thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance.

Decorative Trim: Interior and exterior architectural elements where aesthetics and moderate corrosion resistance are required.

Appliances: Dishwasher interiors, oven linings, water heater tanks, and other household equipment.

Solar Water Heaters: Absorber plates and collector components.

How does 439 (1.4509) compare to 430 (1.4016) stainless steel?
Grade 439 is a titanium-stabilized version of 430 with improved properties. The addition of titanium in 439 provides significantly better resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or high-temperature exposure, making it more suitable for welded components like exhaust systems. 439 also has lower carbon content (≤0.03% vs. ≤0.12%) which further enhances weldability. While both are ferritic and magnetic, 439 offers improved formability, better high-temperature strength, and superior oxidation resistance. 430 may suffer from chromium carbide formation in the heat-affected zone during welding, limiting its use in welded applications.

Is 439 stainless steel suitable for automotive exhaust applications?
Yes, 439 is specifically designed for and widely used in automotive exhaust systems. It offers excellent resistance to exhaust gas condensate corrosion, good high-temperature oxidation resistance up to 800°C, and excellent thermal fatigue resistance for components subject to repeated heating and cooling cycles. Its stabilization allows for reliable welding of exhaust components, and its thermal expansion characteristics are well-matched to other exhaust system materials. It performs particularly well in the mid-section of exhaust systems, including resonators, connecting pipes, and muffler components.
