What is the Equivalent of 1.4401 ?
What is DIN EN 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2) Stainless Steel?
DIN EN 1.4401, also known as X5CrNiMo17-12-2, is a molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steel. Due to the presence of molybdenum in its chemical composition, it offers significantly better corrosion resistance than 1.4301 (X5CrNi18-10), especially in chloride-containing and non-oxidizing acid environments.1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) is the low-carbon variant of 1.4401, offering improved weld corrosion resistance in structural applications.

EN 1.4401 Heat Treatment
Solution Annealing: 1030–1110°C, followed by rapid air or water cooling
Hot Working: 1150–850°C, air cooling
EN 1.4401 Forging
Preheating Temperature: 1150–1180°C
Forging Range: 1180–950°C
Post-Forging Cooling: Rapid cooling in air or water is essential to avoid the formation of detrimental phases that reduce mechanical properties.
Descaling: Any surface scale or decarburization should be removed via pickling or suitable descaling techniques to maintain corrosion resistance.
EN 1.4401 Weldability
Excellent weldability with or without filler metal.
Recommended filler metal: 1.4430
Max interpass temperature: 150°C
Due to its higher carbon content, chromium carbide formation may occur during welding, which can reduce intergranular corrosion resistance.
Post-weld heat treatment may be needed depending on the application.
For extensive welded structures, 1.4404 is preferred due to its superior resistance to weld-related corrosion.
EN 1.4401 Machinability
Due to its higher carbon content compared to 1.4404, machinability is slightly reduced.
EN 1.4401 Corrosion Resistance
PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number): 23.1–28.5
The presence of 2.0–2.5% molybdenum significantly enhances resistance to pitting and chloride corrosion, making 1.4401 clearly superior to 1.4301 and 1.4307 in aggressive environments.
EN 1.4401 Applications
Used in industries and components requiring enhanced corrosion resistance:
Chemical and pulp industry
Paint and coatings production
Oil, soap, and textile sectors
Dairy equipment
Brewery components and instrumentation
