Key factors for high-temperature performance:
High Chromium Content (22-24%): Forms a tough, self-healing chromium oxide scale, preventing further oxygen diffusion and scaling.
High Nickel Content (12-15%): Enhances high-temperature strength, toughness, and resistance to creep.
Austenitic Structure: Provides good ductility and toughness at elevated temperatures, unlike ferritic steels which can become brittle
.
Low Carbon (S-Grade): The 'S' in 309S signifies low carbon, minimizing carbide precipitation and improving weldability and resistance to sensitization (intergranular corrosion) during heating.
Strength Retention: Maintains a larger fraction of its room-temperature strength compared to 304 stainless steel at high temperatures.
