What is 1.4878 SS equivalent to?
1.4878 is the European (EN) designation for a heat-resistant, austenitic stainless steel, also known as AISI 321H or X8CrNiTi18-10, that contains titanium for added high-temperature strength and creep resistance. It offers good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance for applications with prolonged exposure to high temperatures (up to 850°C or 1560°F), such as components in furnaces, silencers, and exhaust systems.

Corrosion Resistance
In the annealed condition, 1.4878 stainless steel performs comparable to 304 grades, with improved performance when welds of these grades are not post-weld annealed or when the application temperature is within the 425-900°C range. It is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and stress corrosion cracking above 60°C.
Heat Resistance
1.4878 stainless steel offers good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 900°C and in continuous service up to 925°C. These grades excel in the 425-900°C range, especially in the presence of subsequent aqueous corrosion. 321H has higher elevated temperature strength and is particularly suitable for high-temperature structural applications.
Is 1.4878 the same as 321?
No, 1.4878 is a European designation for a type of stainless steel, while 321 is another stainless steel grade, referring to the same or very similar stainless steel grades. Therefore, they are not the same, but both refer to similar materials used in high-temperature environments.
What is the 1.4541 material equivalent?
The European standard EN 1.4541 stainless steel is equivalent to the American standard AISI 321. It is also known by the material number X6CrNiTi18-10 and is identified by other designations like UNS S32100 and JIS SUS321.
What is the difference between 1.4541 and 1.4878 material?
The main difference is that 1.4878 is a heat-resistant version of 1.4541, designed for higher temperatures due to its slightly higher carbon and titanium content. Both are titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steels with similar corrosion resistance, but 1.4878 offers higher strength and creep resistance at higher temperatures (up to 850 degrees Celsius) compared to 1.4541 (suitable for temperatures up to 900 degrees Celsius in air).
