What is the difference between 440B and 440C?

Carbon Content

The main difference between 440B and 440C stainless steel lies in their carbon content. 440B steel has a carbon content ranging from 0.75% to 0.95%, while 440C steel ranges from 0.95% to 1.20%.

Hardness
440C steel has a higher carbon content, therefore its hardness is higher than that of 440B steel. After heat treatment, 440B steel can reach a hardness of approximately HRC 58. After heat treatment, 440C steel can reach a hardness of approximately HRC 60.

Global sourcing trends indicate a growing demand for mid-range cutting tools, automotive parts, and industrial tools. 440B is easier to machine than 440C. It is more affordable than premium tool steel while offering higher hardness. Manufacturers are seeking stronger alternatives to 420J2 and 410.
