What Is 1.4512 2D Stainless Steel Sheet?
1.4512 2D Stainless Steel (also known as SUS409) is a Ferritic Stainless Steel alloy, primarily composed of Chromium and Iron. It contains higher levels of Chromium and Molybdenum compared to standard grades like 304 or 430, which enhances its resistance to Corrosion, especially in Chloride-Rich Environments.The 2D Finish refers to the Cold-Rolled surface with a Smooth, Matte Finish, achieved by Annealing and Pickling the steel. This surface is Non-Reflective and is often used in Architectural, Industrial, and Automotive applications. It also offers better Formability and Weldability compared to other finishes.
1.4512 2D Stainless Steel Sheet Key Features
Surface Treatment 2D: Cold-rolled, lightly annealed, and pickled, resulting in a matte to semi-glossy surface (Ra ≈ 0.6–1.0 µm) with good flatness. Suitable for subsequent painting, powder coating, or simple decoration, and is less expensive than 2B or BA finishes.
Corrosion Resistance: With a low chromium content and no molybdenum, the pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) is approximately 10–12. It performs adequately in dry air, light industrial environments, and urban atmospheres, but is susceptible to rusting in conditions containing chloride ions or high humidity and temperature. Its corrosion resistance is inferior to 1.4301 (304) or 1.4401 (316).
High-Temperature Resistance: Thanks to titanium stabilization and moderate chromium content, it can be used continuously at approximately 600–750 °C, with short-term peaks reaching ~800 °C. Commonly used in thermal cycling applications such as exhaust system components.
Main Applications: Automotive exhaust systems (muffler housings, catalytic converter housings, resonators), low-cost heat exchangers, industrial silencers, and building ventilation ducts – applications requiring thermal stability and moderate corrosion resistance, where cost is a significant factor.
