Can 316L stainless steel be welded?
Although stainless steel is relatively easy to weld, it can be tricky in some situations. The two main issues to consider are heat concentration and thermal expansion. Because 316L stainless steel doesn't conduct heat very easily, the metal can overheat if a welder takes too long in a single space.

What welding rod to use for 316 stainless steel?

When welding 316 stainless steel, appropriate electrodes must be selected based on the welding process. ER316L and E316-16 are commonly used and best choices.

The following are commonly used 316 stainless steel welding rods.
ER316L is suitable for gas tungsten arc welding (TIG/GTAW). Its low carbon content ("L" stands for low carbon) effectively prevents intergranular corrosion that can occur during welding. It is specifically designed for 316 stainless steel containing molybdenum.
E316-16 is used for manual metal arc welding (SMAW). It was also developed specifically for the welding needs of 316 stainless steel and is suitable for manual arc welding processes.

The advantages of these two rods are that both offer excellent corrosion resistance (especially pitting resistance) and high-temperature strength, which are highly compatible with the performance requirements of 316 stainless steel.

Can you weld 316 stainless with a 308 rod?

Following the general principle of stainless steel welding, the electrode grade should be the same or higher than the base material. Therefore, it is not recommended to use lower-grade electrodes such as 308 and 309 to weld 316 stainless steel.

Can you weld 304 to 316 stainless steel?

Yes, 304 and 316 stainless steels can be welded together. While they are different grades, they are both austenitic stainless steels, which are relatively easy to weld. The key is to use an appropriate filler material, such as 316L or 308L, and to pay attention to heat control during the welding process.
