Recently, GNEE successfully delivered a total of 10 tons of SUH409L ferritic heat-resistant stainless steel coils to a well-known Australian manufacturer specializing in automotive exhaust systems and industrial heat exchanger equipment. The exported SUH409L stainless steel coils were produced strictly in accordance with JIS G4304 / JIS G4305 standards and supplied with complete quality documentation, including EN10204 3.1 Material Test Certificates (MTC).
During this export project, GNEE implemented strict quality control throughout the entire process, covering raw material selection, production scheduling, surface treatment, quality inspection, packaging and international transportation. Through comprehensive quality management and effective problem-solving procedures, the shipment was successfully delivered and fully met the customer's requirements for dimensional accuracy, surface quality and complete material traceability.
What is SUH409L stainless steel coils?
SUH409L is a ferritic stainless steel containing approximately 10.5%–12.5% chromium and stabilized with titanium; it offers excellent oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature durability. Compared to conventional carbon steel, SUH409L demonstrates superior durability and a longer service life in applications involving exposure to exhaust gases, thermal cycling, and outdoor environments, making it widely used for automotive exhaust pipes, mufflers, heat shields, and industrial equipment components.

Technical Challenges and Solutions in Project Implementation

1: Annealing Oxidation and Formability Control
Challenge:
SUH409L is a ferritic stainless steel that is highly sensitive to annealing temperature and cooling rate. If the protective atmosphere is insufficient during high-temperature annealing, difficult-to-remove chromium oxide scale may form on the strip surface. In addition, improper cooling conditions may cause grain coarsening, affecting the deep drawing and bending performance required by the Australian customer during subsequent stamping processes.
Solution:
During production, GNEE applied a continuous annealing furnace with a 100% hydrogen protective atmosphere, controlling the furnace dew point below -45°C to effectively minimize surface oxidation. The mixed-acid pickling process was optimized to ensure a uniform and clean 2B surface finish. By precisely controlling the final annealing temperature within 820–850°C and applying rapid cooling, the grain size was stabilized at Grade 8 or above, ensuring excellent elongation performance (measured A5: 32.5%) and meeting the customer's requirements for deep drawing and forming applications.
Moisture Prevention and Surface Protection Control for Sea Transport
Challenge:
The shipping route for this batch of SUH409L stainless steel coils traverses waters characterized by high temperatures and humidity; diurnal temperature fluctuations within the containers can easily lead to condensation (often referred to as "container rain"). Given that 409L stainless steel has a chromium content of approximately 11%, prolonged exposure to moisture can cause yellow staining on the surface, thereby compromising its aesthetic quality.
Solution:
A protective packaging strategy utilizing VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) film and a three-layer export-grade system was implemented, providing multi-layered isolation through the use of anti-rust paper, plastic film, and galvanized steel covers. Additionally, industrial-grade calcium chloride desiccants were placed inside the containers, and the moisture content of the wooden pallets was strictly controlled to ≤12%. These measures effectively mitigated the risks of moisture and condensation during transit, ensuring the steel coils maintained excellent surface condition upon arrival in Australia.

Traceability:
Each steel coil bears a unique Heat Number and Coil Number, allowing for full traceability back to the specific steelmaking heat, hot-rolling parameters of the master coil, and cold-rolling annealing records.

Independent Third-Party Verification:
In addition to the in-house EN 10204 3.1 certificate, on-site sampling was conducted by the international third-party certification body SGS prior to packing. Results from both spectroscopic analysis and mechanical tensile testing fully complied with the customer's engineering drawings and JIS G 4312 technical specifications.

Customer Feedback:
Upon the goods' arrival at the Melbourne facility, the customer highly commended the coils for their surface flatness, thickness tolerance (strictly controlled within ±0.02 mm), and stamping performance; the procurement process for the next batch has already been officially initiated.
