What is the difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel foil?

The primary difference is their carbon content. Standard 316 contains a maximum of 0.08% carbon, while 316L contains 0.03% or less ("L" stands for Low Carbon). For ultra-thin applications like stainless steel foil, 316L is typically preferred because its lower carbon content prevents carbide precipitation and weld decay during high-temperature forming, stamping, or brazing processes.

Our 316/316L Bright Annealed stainless steel foils are annealed in a continuous furnace at 1050°C to 1100°C under a hydrogen-nitrogen protective atmosphere. This process prevents any scale formation, keeping the surface roughness (Ra value) consistently controlled between 0.05 and 0.1 μm. This is significantly superior to pickled surfaces (Ra ≥ 0.5 μm) and 2B finishes (Ra 0.2 to 0.5 μm). Furthermore, we guarantee that our 316/316L stainless steel foils maintain a stable Mo content of 2.0% to 2.1%+ and a Ni content above 10%. We can provide Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) calculation reports and intergranular corrosion test reports. This effectively prevents intergranular sensitization during welding or passivation, eliminates pitting perforation in acidic environments, and fully satisfies the durability testing requirements for fuel cells.

We control the hardness variation across the entire coil within ±5 HV. Powered by the constant temperature control of our precision bright annealing furnace, we ensure highly uniform material microstructure. Our 316 stainless steel BA foils undergo Ultrasonic Degreasing, resulting in a residual surface oil level below 10 mg/m². GNEE employs a multi-layer export packaging solution for its 316/316L bright-annealed stainless steel foil. Each coil is wrapped successively in a protective PVC film, anti-rust paper, and moisture-proof PE film, with edge protectors added for reinforcement; the coils are then packed into fumigation-free wooden crates or export-grade plywood pallets. Steel strapping and shock-absorbing cushioning materials are used during the packaging process to prevent shifting during handling and maritime transport.

 

 

What is the difference between Slit Edge and Deburred Edge?
Slit Edge: The standard edge after the foil is cut to width. It may have a tiny burr.
Deburred/Rounded Edge: An additional process to smooth the edges, often required if the foil is handled manually or used in sensitive assemblies to prevent cutting other components.

Can 316L foil be laser cut?
A: Yes. Because it is so thin, fiber lasers or UV lasers work exceptionally well, providing high-speed cutting with minimal Heat Affected Zones (HAZ).

How should I store 316L foil coils?
A: Keep in a dry, temperature-controlled environment. Even though 316L is corrosion-resistant, high humidity can cause "water spots" or condensation between the layers of the coil, which can be difficult to remove without marking the BA surface.
