What Is ASTM A240 Type 2205 Sheet?
ASTM A240 Type 2205 refers to duplex stainless steel plate made from UNS S32205 / EN 1.4462 material. It combines the strength of ferritic steel with the corrosion resistance of austenitic steel, is twice as strong as 316L, and is more resistant to pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ASTM A240 2205 duplex stainless steel plate is often used in marine environments, chemical processing, offshore structures, and pressure vessel fabrication, where conventional stainless steels may fail prematurely.

Advantages
The pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of Type 2205 stainless steel plate (PREN ≥ 34) is significantly higher than that of 316L (PREN ≈ 25). Compared with fully austenitic stainless steels like 304 and 316L, ASTM A240 2205 duplex stainless steel offers remarkably improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in environments containing chlorides and hydrogen sulfide.
UNS S32205 sheet features a duplex microstructure (austenitic–ferritic) with a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa, more than twice that of 316L stainless steel. Its tensile strength ranges from 620 to 880 MPa, making it ideal for high-pressure vessels and large structural components.
2205 duplex stainless steel sheet requires no complex post-weld heat treatment, and its weld zone retains strength and corrosion resistance comparable to the base metal. It also provides excellent cold workability (bending, stamping), which helps reduce processing costs and enables efficient mass production of large components such as offshore platform supports and chemical reactors-improving manufacturing efficiency by over 30%.
