The material features a precisely controlled chemical composition of 0.26%–0.40% Carbon and 12.0%–14.0% Chromium . Following quenching and tempering (Q&T) treatment, it achieves an optimal hardness profile of HRC 50–55 while retaining excellent structural strength and tribological properties. In its mill-annealed state, the alloy guarantees a minimum tensile strength of 540 MPa, a minimum yield strength of 225 MPa, and an elongation of 18%.

Yes, SUS420J2 is strongly magnetic. It belongs to the 400 series of martensitic stainless steels, which have a body-centered cubic (BCC) crystalline structure and a high iron content, making them highly responsive to magnets in both annealed and hardened states.
What is the difference between 420J2 and 420HC ?
The primary difference is carbon content. 420HC (High Carbon) contains around 0.45%–0.50% carbon, making it a viable, edge-holding blade steel. 420J2 is a lower-carbon version (approx. 0.15%–0.35% carbon), which is much softer and generally used for diving knives, as a handle material, or for decorative blades.
What is the hardness of SUS420J2?
The hardness of SUS420J2 depends significantly on its heat treatment. In its annealed state, it has a hardness of 150–200 HV (roughly 80–90 HRB). When quenched and tempered, it achieves a high hardness of 50–55 HRC (up to 58–60 HRC maximum) to provide excellent wear and edge retention.
