Differences between 309, 309S, and 309H
Carbon Content: This is the biggest difference between the two. 309 has a higher carbon content, while 309S (UNS S30908) is a low-carbon version (carbon content ≤ 0.08%).
Weldability: Due to its low carbon content, 309S minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, thus reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion.
What temperature can 309S round tubes withstand?
Continuous Service: Under atmospheric conditions, 309S round tubes exhibit excellent oxidation resistance and can be used at temperatures up to 1000°C (1832°F).
Intermittent Service: In environments with repeated temperature fluctuations, the recommended maximum operating temperature is approximately 1038°C (1900°F).
What are the differences between 309S and 310S round tubes?
Composition Comparison: 310S has a higher content of chromium (25%) and nickel (20%).
Upper Temperature Limit: 310S can withstand temperatures up to 1100°C - 1150°C, while 309S can withstand 1000°C.
Cost recommendation: If your operating temperature is between 800°C and 1000°C, 309S is a more economical choice; if it exceeds 1000°C or better resistance to thermal fatigue is required, then 310S should be chosen.

How to Select 309S Round Pipes?
Standards: Commonly used are ASTM A312 (industrial piping) or ASTM A249/A213 (boilers/heat exchangers).
Dimensions: Outer diameter (OD) and wall thickness (WT) or Schedule (e.g., Sch 10S, Sch 40S).
Surface: Usually pickled or polished.
Certification: The supplier must provide an MTC (Material Certificate of Compatibility) containing chemical composition and high-temperature tensile test results.
