Differences between 309, 309S, and 309H
The main differences between 309, 309S, and 309H lie in their carbon content and high-temperature performance: 309 (maximum carbon content 0.20%) has good oxidation resistance up to 980°C and moderate creep strength; 309S (maximum carbon content 0.08%) reduces the risk of sensitization and increases the continuous service temperature to 1050°C; while 309H (carbon content 0.04%–0.10%, with controlled nitrogen content) maximizes high-temperature strength, maintaining a yield strength Rp₀.₂ ≥ 205 MPa after prolonged exposure at 870°C, making it suitable for applications such as furnace tubes, heat treatment fixtures, and petrochemical reactors.
Applications
309S stainless steel tubes are used in petrochemical reformer coils (operating temperature 850–1050 °C), heat treatment equipment fixtures and radiant tubes (short-term peak ~1100 °C), boiler superheater sections, and high-temperature combustion gas pipelines. 309H, in particular, maintains a yield strength of Rp₀.₂ ≥ 205 MPa at 870 °C, making it especially suitable for critical components that need to withstand high temperatures and mechanical loads for extended periods.
Stainless steel seamless pipe testing
The pre-shipment testing of 309S stainless steel pipes typically includes hydrostatic testing (pressure ≥ 1.5 times the working pressure, holding time ≥ 5 seconds), eddy current or ultrasonic flaw detection (defect detection sensitivity ≤ 0.5 mm), chemical composition analysis, and high-temperature tensile testing, ensuring the reliability and long service life of the pipes under high-temperature corrosion and mechanical loads.
