What Is a 0.6mm Stainless Steel Sheet?
A 0.6 mm stainless steel sheet is a thin cold-rolled flat product, supplied as sheet or coil, and covered by JIS G4305 for cold-rolled stainless steel sheet and by ASTM A240 for sheet and strip. In standard terminology it is a sheet rather than a plate: plate thickness generally starts at 3 mm in JIS practice or 4.76 mm under ASTM, while 0.6 mm falls in the light-gauge sheet band used for precision parts.
Thin gauge is specified when the design requires corrosion resistance or surface quality without the weight of a thick plate. The cold-rolling process gives the material a smooth, uniform surface, close thickness control and good flatness, while retaining the fully annealed, soft microstructure needed for forming operations.

Thickness Tolerance and Surface Finish
Cold-rolled sheet in the 0.60–0.80 mm thickness band is held to a thickness tolerance of ±0.06 mm for widths below 1600 mm under JIS G4305, which is why thin-gauge sheet is chosen where assembled stack heights and clearances must be controlled precisely. Surface finishes are normally 2B (cold rolled, annealed, pickled and skin-passed, semi-bright) or BA (bright annealed, mirror-like), with typical 2B roughness of 0.1–0.5 μm Ra. For chemical and food applications the smooth 2B surface reduces product adhesion and simplifies cleaning; BA is selected for decorative and optical uses.

Fabrication of 0.6mm Sheet
Thin sheet cuts cleanly by laser, guillotine, stamping and water jet. Laser cutting is preferred for complex contours and gives a narrow heat-affected zone, with the burr controlled by process parameters. Bending follows normal sheet rules: the minimum bend radius is typically one to two times the sheet thickness for austenitic grades in the annealed condition, and springback is greater than for thick plate because of the low section stiffness. Fusion welding of 0.6 mm material is possible by TIG or laser but distortion control is demanding; where the design allows, mechanical joining, hemming or adhesive bonding avoids heat input entirely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 0.6mm stainless steel considered plate or sheet?
It is classified as sheet. In ASTM practice, plate begins at 4.76 mm (3/16 in), and in JIS practice cold-rolled sheet covers 0.3–6.0 mm, so 0.6 mm is squarely in the sheet range.
Which grades are available in 0.6mm thickness?
The most common are 304 and 316L austenitic grades and 430 ferritic grade, all per ASTM A240 and JIS G4305. Other grades such as 321, 409 and 444 are available on request depending on mill minimums.
What is the standard width of 0.6mm sheet?
Common widths are 1000 mm, 1219 mm and 1250 mm, with 1500 mm available for some grades. Coil widths from 600 mm to 1250 mm are typical, and narrower slit coils can be produced for stamping lines.
Can 0.6mm stainless steel sheet be laser cut?
Yes. Fibre laser cutting is the standard method for thin stainless sheet, producing clean edges with minimal dross and a small heat-affected zone. Fixturing and gas pressure are adjusted to control edge quality at this gauge.
What surface finishes are available on 0.6mm sheet?
2B and BA are the standard finishes, with No. 4 brushed and mirror-polished finishes available as value-added processing. The base finish is specified in the purchase order and verified against JIS G4305 or ASTM A480 requirements.
How is distortion avoided when working with 0.6mm sheet?
Minimize heat input: use laser or stamping instead of heavy welding, sequence welds to balance shrinkage, and clamp the sheet on a flat backing plate. For large panels, edge welding or spot welding with controlled pitch reduces buckling better than continuous seams.
