Overview
1.4404 is the ultra-low carbon variant of 1.4401, conforming to European EN standards and corresponding to AISI 316L. Its carbon content is strictly limited to ≤ 0.03%, which eliminates the risk of intergranular corrosion in welded joints and during high-temperature service (450-850°C). By minimizing carbon, it prevents the precipitation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries, avoiding "chromium depletion" and ensuring long-term corrosion stability. It retains the full 2.00-3.00% molybdenum, 16.00-18.00% Cr, and 10.00-14.00% Ni composition of 1.4401, thus maintaining superior chloride corrosion resistance. Non-magnetic, highly ductile, and easy to weld, it is perfectly suited for large welded structures in European industrial and marine applications.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.03, Si ≤ 1.00, Mn ≤ 2.00, P ≤ 0.040, S ≤ 0.030, Cr: 16.00-18.00, Ni: 10.00-14.00, Mo: 2.00-3.00, N ≤ 0.10
Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)
Tensile Strength (Rm): ≥ 485 MPa; Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 170 MPa; Elongation (A): ≥ 40%; Brinell Hardness (HB): ≤ 217
Core Advantages
Ultra-low carbon content prevents intergranular corrosion in welded areas; complies with European EN standards for consistent quality; no post-weld heat treatment required, simplifying production; molybdenum ensures superior chloride corrosion resistance; excellent low-temperature toughness; ideal for large-scale welded structures and marine applications.
Applications
Seawater desalination plants in Europe, large chemical storage tanks, offshore platform structures, cryogenic storage vessels, medical instruments, and pharmaceutical processing pipelines.
Equivalent Grades
AISI 316L, UNS S31603, STS316L, SUS316L, GB 022Cr17Ni12Mo2
