When selecting stainless steel for highly corrosive or high-pressure environments, choosing between 1.4462 and 1.4410 duplex grades can significantly impact performance and lifecycle costs. Both offer exceptional corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, but they differ in alloy content, performance range, and cost.
Is 1.4410 Super Duplex?
1.4410 stainless steel, also known as X2CrNiMoN25-7-4, is a super duplex stainless steel commonly referred to as Super Duplex 2507 or UNS S32750. It contains 25% chromium, 7% nickel, and 4% molybdenum, offering extremely high resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion. Its yield strength is more than twice that of 316L, and it's widely used in offshore platforms, desalination plants, subsea systems, and aggressive chemical processing environments.
What Is 1.4462 Material?
1.4462, also designated as X2CrNiMoN22-5-3, is a standard duplex stainless steel and the EN equivalent of UNS S31803 / S32205 (Duplex 2205). It contains about 22% chromium, 5% nickel, and 3% molybdenum, providing a balance between strength and corrosion resistance. While not classified as "super duplex," 1.4462 material offers excellent performance in moderately aggressive environments, such as wastewater treatment, chemical tanks, heat exchangers, and pulp & paper systems-at a more economical cost compared to 1.4410.

Case Study: Duplex vs. Super Duplex in Seawater Cooling Systems
A Middle Eastern power plant needed corrosion-resistant piping for a seawater cooling system. GNEE initially proposed 1.4462 duplex stainless steel, but due to high salinity and temperature, the engineering team switched to 1.4410 super duplex. The S32750 pipes provided higher resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking, ensuring safe operation with reduced maintenance over a 20-year lifecycle. This switch increased upfront material cost by 18% but saved over $300,000 in potential corrosion damage.
