What Is 1.4878
Material number 1.4878, designated X12CrNiTi18-10, is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a controlled higher carbon content for elevated-temperature service. It belongs to the same family as AISI 321H and is supplied as plate and coil for industrial applications requiring a combination of high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, and weldability.
Chemical Composition
The composition is carbon 0.08 to 0.14 percent, silicon 1.0 percent maximum, manganese 2.0 percent maximum, phosphorus 0.045 percent maximum, sulfur 0.015 percent maximum, chromium 17.0 to 19.0 percent, nickel 9.0 to 12.0 percent, and titanium at least five times the carbon content up to a maximum of 0.70 percent. Titanium stabilization prevents chromium carbide precipitation, preserving corrosion resistance after welding and in the sensitization temperature range.
Mechanical Properties
In the solution-annealed condition the plate has a minimum tensile strength of 550 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 220 MPa with a minimum elongation of 35 percent and hardness up to 223 HB. The higher carbon content compared with standard 321 improves creep and stress-rupture strength in the range of 600 to 900 degrees C, resisting deformation under long-term high stress.
High-Temperature Behavior
The chromium-nickel base forms a stable, adherent oxide scale that resists scaling and oxidation in cyclic and continuous high-temperature service, and the titanium-stabilized structure keeps the weld zone and heat-affected zone corrosion resistant without post-weld heat treatment in most applications. These properties make the grade suitable for large high-temperature welded assemblies.
Applications
1.4878 plate and coil are used for industrial furnace components, high-temperature flue linings, furnace internals, heat treatment equipment, boiler and superheater parts, and heavy-duty heat-resistant components in the heat treatment, petrochemical, and power industries.
Fabrication Notes
The material welds by conventional processes with stabilized filler metal, and post-weld annealing is generally not required because of titanium stabilization. Cold forming is possible in the annealed condition, and hot forming should be followed by solution annealing to restore optimum properties.
