What defines 2205's chemical composition?

It contains 21-23% chromium, 4.5-6.5% nickel, 2.5-3.5% molybdenum, and 0.08-0.20% nitrogen. This composition results in a microstructure that's roughly 50% austenite and 50% ferrite.

How does 2205 perform in terms of strength?

2205 has a high tensile strength of 620-827 MPa and a yield strength of 450 MPa, which is about twice that of austenitic stainless steels like 304, making it ideal for weight-sensitive applications.

What are its corrosion resistance properties?

It offers excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, especially in chloride-containing environments. Its corrosion resistance is superior to 316L in many aggressive settings.

How does 2205 handle fabrication and welding?

2205 is weldable, but proper techniques are needed to maintain the balance of austenite and ferrite phases. It has good formability, allowing for bending, rolling, and other forming operations.

What are 2205's typical applications?

Commonly used in oil and gas pipelines, chemical storage tanks, and offshore structures. It's also found in desalination plants and pulp and paper industry equipment where strength and corrosion resistance are crucial.
