Overview of ASTM A312 TP304L
ASTM A312 covers seamless, welded and heavily cold-worked welded austenitic stainless steel pipe for general corrosive and elevated-temperature service. TP304L is the low-carbon member of the 304 family, designated UNS S30403, with carbon limited to 0.035% maximum. The reduced carbon content prevents chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding, so TP304L pipe can normally be used in the as-welded condition in services where TP304 would require post-weld solution annealing. This makes TP304L one of the most widely specified stainless pipe grades for welded process piping systems.
Chemical Composition
Composition limits for TP304L per ASTM A312 are shown below.
| Element | C | Mn | P | S | Si | Cr | Ni | N |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Limit, % | 0.035 max | 2.00 max | 0.045 max | 0.030 max | 0.75 max | 18.0-20.0 | 8.0-13.0 | 0.10 max |
Compared with TP304, the chromium and nickel ranges are similar, but the carbon limit is reduced from 0.08% to 0.035%. This single change is the reason for the L suffix: low carbon, which suppresses sensitization during welding and service in the carbide precipitation range.
Mechanical Properties
Minimum room-temperature tensile requirements per ASTM A312 are shown below.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength, MPa | 485 min |
| 0.2% yield strength, MPa | 170 min |
| Elongation in 2 in., % | 35 min |
The low-carbon chemistry slightly lowers room-temperature strength relative to TP304 but provides the welding and corrosion advantages that dominate piping design decisions. At elevated temperatures, design stresses for TP304L pipe are taken from the applicable ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code tables.
Seamless vs Welded Pipe
Seamless Manufacturing
Seamless TP304L pipe is hot finished or cold finished from a solid billet, with no longitudinal seam. It offers uniform structure, is available in the full range of schedules, and is preferred for high-pressure service and where the presence of a weld seam is undesirable for any reason.
Welded Manufacturing
Welded TP304L pipe is formed from strip or plate and joined by an autogenous or filler-added longitudinal weld, typically by TIG, plasma or high-frequency processes. ASTM A312 requires the weld seam to be made by a qualified procedure, and the finished pipe must pass the specified testing. Heavily cold-worked welded pipe is produced by cold working the weld area to meet the same strength requirements as the base metal.
Testing and Inspection per ASTM A999
Pipe ordered to ASTM A312 is furnished in accordance with ASTM A999, the general requirements standard for alloy and stainless steel pipe. Each length is hydrostatically tested, or an equivalent non-destructive test is applied when permitted by the specification. Additional requirements commonly specified include ultrasonic or eddy current examination of the weld seam for welded pipe, flattening and bend tests, mechanical tests on each heat, dimensional verification, and positive material identification where required by the project specification.
Corrosion Resistance
TP304L resists atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, foodstuffs, organic acids, mild chemical media and oxidizing environments, and its low carbon content keeps the heat-affected zone of welds free of sensitization. It is not intended for hot chloride service: in seawater, brine or chloride-laden process streams at elevated temperature, molybdenum-bearing grades such as TP316L, duplex grades or super-austenitic grades should be specified instead.
Typical Applications
Chemical and petrochemical process piping
Food, beverage and dairy processing lines
Pharmaceutical and bioprocess piping systems
Water treatment and desalination plant piping
General corrosive and sanitary service at moderate temperatures
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What does TP304L mean?
TP is the traditional ASTM prefix for pipe products, 304 is the base austenitic grade, and L indicates low carbon with a maximum of 0.035%. The grade is also designated UNS S30403, and the pipe standard is ASTM A312.
2. What is the difference between 304 and 304L pipe?
The carbon limit: TP304 allows 0.08% maximum while TP304L allows 0.035% maximum. The lower carbon of TP304L prevents sensitization and intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone after welding, so 304L pipe is preferred for welded systems and for service where post-weld heat treatment is impractical.
3. How do I choose between seamless and welded 304L pipe?
Both are covered by ASTM A312 with the same composition and mechanical requirements. Seamless pipe is chosen for high-pressure duty, small sizes and where a weld seam must be avoided; welded pipe offers economy, larger diameters and long lengths, with the weld seam verified by non-destructive examination.
4. What testing is performed on ASTM A312 pipe?
Per ASTM A999, each pipe is hydrostatically tested or given an equivalent non-destructive test, and the material must pass the required tensile, flattening and bend tests. Buyers frequently add ultrasonic or eddy current examination of weld seams, PMI checks and third-party inspection.
5. What filler metal is used to weld TP304L pipe?
The standard matching filler is ER308L per AWS A5.9, which has a low carbon content and a slightly higher chromium and nickel balance designed for welding 304L base metal. Weld procedures should be qualified to the applicable code, and joint design, shielding gas and interpass temperature control follow normal austenitic stainless practice.
