What are the key compositional differences and typical uses?
Both alloys have high chromium and nickel to resist oxidation. Grade 309 typically contains 22-24% Cr and 12-15% Ni. Grade 310 has even more: 24-26% Cr and 19-22% Ni. This makes 310 capable of withstanding higher continuous temperatures. They are primarily used for furnace parts, heat exchangers, radiant tubes, and kiln components.

How do their high-temperature oxidation resistances compare?
The higher chromium in 310 forms a more stable and protective oxide scale (Cr₂O₃) at very high temperatures. While 309 is excellent up to about 980°C (1800°F), 310 can be used continuously up to approximately 1150°C (2100°F) in oxidizing atmospheres. For cyclic heating and cooling, 310's scale is also more adherent and spalls less easily.

In which specific furnace atmospheres is one grade preferred over the other?
Choose 310 for strongly oxidizing atmospheres (excess air) at the highest temperatures and where resistance to carburization (carbon pickup) is critical. Grade 309 is often selected for moderately oxidizing to reducing atmospheres and where sulfur compounds are present, as it maintains good resistance at a lower cost. It also serves well as a lower-cost backing material for 310 foil.

What are important fabrication considerations for these grades?
Both have high work hardening rates, requiring more power for forming. They can be welded using matching or over-alloyed filler metals (e.g., 309 for 309, 310 for 310). Post-weld annealing is recommended to restore optimal corrosion and heat resistance. Their high alloy content also makes them more expensive to machine than standard grades like 304.

What is the final guideline for selecting between 309 and 310?
Base the decision on the maximum continuous operating temperature and atmosphere. For the most severe, constant high-heat oxidizing conditions above 1000°C, specify 310. For intermittent service, lower peak temperatures, or where cost is a significant factor, 309 provides robust performance. Always confirm the exact furnace atmosphere composition with the equipment manufacturer.
