What are the basic compositions and general properties of 304 and 316?
Both are chromium-nickel austenitic steels. 304 (UNS S30400) contains about 18% Cr and 8% Ni. 316 (UNS S31600) has a similar base but adds 2-3% Mo. This molybdenum gives 316 its enhanced corrosion resistance, particularly against chlorides. Both grades offer excellent formability, weldability, and toughness, with 316 being slightly stronger.

How does molybdenum specifically improve corrosion resistance?
Molybdenum strengthens the protective passive layer on the steel's surface. It dramatically slows down the initiation and growth of pitting and crevice corrosion in the presence of chlorides (e.g., saltwater, de-icing salts, bleach). This makes 316 the minimum recommended grade for most marine, coastal, or industrial processing environments where chlorides are present.

In which applications is 316 strictly necessary, and where is 304 sufficient?
Use 316 for marine hardware, chemical processing equipment, pharmaceutical plants, coastal architectural panels, and anywhere chlorides are concentrated. 304 is sufficient for interior architectural trim, kitchen equipment, tanks for many food products, and general applications in dry or mild inland atmospheres where chlorides are absent or minimal.

Are there cost and fabrication differences to consider?
Grade 316 carries a significant price premium over 304 due to its molybdenum and nickel content. Their fabrication processes (welding, forming) are very similar, though 316 may require slightly more care to preserve its corrosion resistance during welding. The key is ensuring the correct filler metal is used for 316 (typically 316L).

What is the final, simple rule for material selection?
Let the presence of chlorides guide your choice. If the application involves exposure to salt, seawater, chemical chlorides, or persistent moisture in coastal/industrial areas, invest in 316. For dry, indoor, or controlled environments without chlorides, 304 is an excellent and economical choice. Always verify the specific service environment during design.
