Description
316 is a molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steel, designed to deliver superior corrosion resistance-especially in chloride-containing environments-compared to 304. It contains 16.0-18.5% chromium, 10.0-14.0% nickel, and 2.0-3.0% molybdenum, a key addition that enhances pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, making it ideal for marine, coastal, and chemical applications. Its stable austenitic structure ensures non-magnetic properties at room temperature, while offering excellent tensile strength, ductility, and toughness-even at low temperatures. Unlike 304, 316 thrives in harsh environments, including saltwater, chemical processing, and coastal atmospheres, while maintaining good formability and weldability. It is the preferred upgrade for applications where 304's corrosion resistance is insufficient, balancing performance and cost-effectiveness.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.08, Cr: 16.00-18.50, Ni: 10.00-14.00, Mo: 2.00-3.00, Mn ≤ 2.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 520 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 205 MPa, Elongation ≥ 40%, Hardness ≤ 215 HB
Advantages
Superior pitting/crevice corrosion resistance in chloride environments; excellent performance in marine/chemical settings; good low-temperature toughness; non-magnetic; easy to form and weld; more durable than 304 in harsh conditions.
Applications
Marine equipment, chemical processing machinery, food processing equipment, pharmaceutical components, coastal construction, and chloride-rich industrial environments.
Equivalent Grades
AISI 316, UNS S31600, EN 1.4401, GB 06Cr17Ni12Mo2, SUS316
