What is ASTM a 376 material?

ASTM A376 covers seamless austenitic steel pipe intended for high-temperature central-station service. ASTM a376 grades covered are five H grades and two nitrogen grades. ASTM A376 Pipe may be either hot finished or cold finished, with a suitable finishing treatment.

A376/A 376M Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe Chemical Composition

ASTM A376/A 376M covers seamless austenitic steel pipe intended for high-temperature service. The chemical composition of the specific grade within A376/A 376M, such as TP304, TP316, or TP321, will determine the exact percentages of elements like chromium, nickel, and others. Generally, austenitic stainless steels contain a significant amount of chromium and nickel.

A376/A 376M Stainless Steel Pipe Yield Strength

The yield strength of A376/A376M stainless steel pipe varies depending on the specific grade and temper. For example, ASTM A376 TP304 typically has a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa (30,000 psi), while ASTM A376 TP316 has a yield strength range of 30,000 to 50,000 psi in the annealed condition.

Materials and Fabrication
1. Fabrication: Pipes may be hot- or cold-finished at the manufacturer's option, with appropriate finishing treatments as required.

Heat Treatment.
1. All pipes shall be delivered in the heat-treated condition unless the order specifically states otherwise. If a final heat treatment is not included in the order, each pipe shall be stamped "HT-O."
2. Grades TP304, TP304N, TP304LN, TP316, TP36NT, TP316LN, TP321, TP347, TP348, 16-8-2H, S31725, and 83/726 - Unless otherwise specified in the order, heat treatment shall consist of heating to a minimum temperature of 1900°F [1040°C] followed by quenching in water or rapid cooling by other means.

3. The purchaser may specify controlled construction or special service characteristics as a guide to the most appropriate heat treatment. If the final heat treatment temperature is less than 1900°F [1040°C], each pipe shall be marked with the final heat treatment temperature in degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius after the suffix "HT".

4. Grades TP304H, TP316H, TP321H, TP347H, and 16-8-2H: If cold working is involved in the processing, the minimum solution treatment temperature shall be 2000°F [1100°C] for Grades TP321 and TP347H, 1900°F [1040°C] for Grades TP304 and TP316H, and 1800°F [980°C] for Grade 16-8-2H.
If hot-rolled, the minimum solution treatment temperature for TP321H and TP347H grades shall be 1925°F [1050°C], for TP304H and TP316H grades shall be 1900°F [1040°C], and for 16-8-2H grade shall be 1800°F [980°C].

5. Solution annealing temperatures above 1950°F [1065°C] may reduce the intergranular corrosion resistance of TP321, TP321H, TP347, TP347H, TP348, and TP348H steels after subsequent exposure to sensitized conditions. When otherwise specified by the purchaser, a low-temperature stabilization or re-solution anneal shall be performed after the initial high-temperature solution anneal.

6. The grain size of Grades 304H, 316H, 321H, and 347H shall be Grade 7 or coarser, as determined in accordance with Test Method E112.
