ASTM A269 TP316L Polished Stainless Steel Welded Tube
ASTM A269 specifies requirements for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel pipe for general corrosive environments and is commonly used in plumbing and plumbing applications.
Our ASTM A269 TP316L is a low-carbon welded stainless steel pipe suitable for general corrosive conditions and high-temperature applications. It offers excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride environments. It is suitable for use in industries such as chemical, pharmaceutical, and marine, but may not offer the same pressure resistance as seamless pipe. Polishing is available to improve surface quality and appearance. The pipe is polished internally and/or externally using abrasive belts or brushes to achieve the desired surface finish (e.g., 180G, 240G, 320G) and reduce bacterial adhesion, which is critical for food, pharmaceutical, and medical applications.

Surface Finish (Polish)
The polish level is critical and is usually specified by the user. It is measured in terms of grit (e.g., 180G) or by Roughness Average (Ra) in microinches (µin) or micrometers (µm).
| Grit Finish | Typical Ra Value | Application |
|---|---|---|
| #4 / 180G | < 0.8 µm / 32 µin | General sanitary applications, architectural |
| #4L / 240G | < 0.5 µm / 20 µin | Dairy, food processing, brewing |
| #7 / 320G | < 0.4 µm / 15 µin | Pharmaceutical, cosmetic, high-purity |
| #8 Mirror | < 0.3 µm / 10 µin | Semiconductor, ultra-high purity (UHP) |

Differences from Similar Tubing
TP316L: Compared to ASTM A213, A213 covers seamless tubing primarily for boiler, superheater, and heat exchanger applications (high-temperature, high-pressure service). A269 is intended for "general service," including pressure service, but also focuses on corrosion resistance.
TP316L: Compared to ASTM A249, A249 covers welded tubing for boilers, condensers, and heat exchangers. It has more stringent testing requirements for weld integrity and high-pressure service than A269.
