Scope of ASTM A270/A270M-2025a

ASTM A270/A270M-2025a is the ASTM International specification for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel sanitary tubing produced for hygienic service. The A270 designation is written in inch-pound units, while A270M is the metric companion; the technical requirements of the two versions are identical, only the units of measure differ. Tubing made to this specification is intended to drain cleanly, resist corrosion from food, dairy and pharmaceutical media, and present a product-contact surface that does not harbour bacteria.

Because the specification is written for hygienic duty, it controls three items that a general-purpose tubing specification does not: internal surface roughness, freedom from defects on the product side, and cleanliness of the bore. Round tube is the normal product form, supplied in straight lengths or in coils, with dimensional and finish requirements verified by the producing mill before shipment.

Grades and Chemical Composition

Four austenitic grades cover the great majority of sanitary orders: TP304, TP304L, TP316 and TP316L. Low-carbon variants are normally chosen where field welding is expected, since reduced carbon limits chromium carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone.

Grade UNS Carbon, max Chromium Nickel Molybdenum
TP304 S30400 0.08% 18.0-20.0% 8.0% min -
TP304L S30403 0.035% 18.0-20.0% 8.0% min -
TP316 S31600 0.08% 16.0-18.0% 10.0-14.0% 2.00-3.00%
TP316L S31603 0.035% 16.0-18.0% 10.0-14.0% 2.00-3.00%

The molybdenum addition in the 316 grades raises pitting resistance in chloride-bearing product streams and in the caustic and acidic detergents used during clean-in-place cycles, which is why 316L is the default choice for pharmaceutical and aseptic process lines.

Dimensions, Tolerances and Surface Finish

Outside diameter: commonly from 1/2 in. to 12 in., covering the line sizes used in dairy, brewery and bioprocess skids.

Wall thickness: typically 0.035 in. (0.89 mm) to 0.120 in. (3.05 mm), selected against the working pressure and the required weld penetration.

Internal finish: a smooth, crevice-free bore is mandatory; sanitary tube is frequently supplied at 20 microinch (0.5 micrometre) Ra or better, with mechanical polishing, electropolishing or a specified as-welded finish depending on the end use.

Straightness and square cut ends: controlled so that orbital welds close up without mismatched faces.

Dimensions and tolerances are ordered as inch or metric values by choosing A270 or A270M on the purchase order. Surface roughness is measured in microinches (microinch Ra) or micrometres (micrometre Ra) with a stylus profilometer, and the acceptance limit should be stated explicitly because finish class, not chemistry, is what usually separates a sanitary tube from a general-service tube.

Manufacturing, Heat Treatment and Testing

Both seamless and welded constructions are acceptable. Seamless sanitary tube is produced by hot working followed by cold drawing to the finished size. Welded tube is produced from strip, formed and welded autogenously, usually by tungsten inert gas or plasma, and the weld bead is rolled or floated so that the internal surface stays flush. After forming, austenitic tube is solution annealed and rapidly cooled so that carbides are taken back into solution and the maximum corrosion resistance is restored; a bright anneal in a controlled atmosphere preserves the finish without further pickling.

Common verification items include tensile testing, flattening or reverse-bend testing of welded tube, dimensional gauging, hydrostatic or eddy current testing for soundness, surface finish measurement, and intergranular corrosion testing per ASTM A262 when the purchaser specifies it. Welded tube may also be examined radiographically if the application demands it.

How ASTM A270 Relates to A269 and A249

ASTM A269 covers seamless and welded austenitic tubing for general service, where surface finish is not the governing requirement. ASTM A249 covers welded austenitic tube for boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers and condensers. ASTM A270 sits alongside them as the hygienic option: the same austenitic metallurgy, but with an added emphasis on internal finish, cleanliness and drainability that food, dairy and pharmaceutical processes require.

Typical Applications in Hygienic Industries

Dairy and food processing lines, including raw milk, yoghurt and CIP return circuits

Brewery, winery and beverage transfer mains

Pharmaceutical and bioprocess piping, buffer preparation and water systems

Cosmetic and personal-care process piping

Sanitary heat exchangers, pumps, valves and fittings where tube-to-fitting finish must match

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between ASTM A270 and A270M?
A270 states requirements in inch-pound units and A270M in metric (SI) units. The acceptance criteria are technically equivalent, so the choice is a matter of how the drawing dimensions are written.

Q: Which stainless steel grades are typical for ASTM A270 tubing?
TP304, TP304L, TP316 and TP316L are the standard grades. TP316L is preferred for pharmaceutical duty and for product streams that carry chlorides or aggressive cleaning chemicals.

Q: Can ASTM A270 tubing be used in welded systems?
Yes. Both seamless and welded tube are covered. Welding procedure qualification and purging must be controlled so that the internal finish and corrosion resistance of the tube are not degraded at the joint.

Q: How is the sanitary surface finish measured?
With a stylus profilometer, reported as Ra in microinches or micrometres. Sanitary tube is commonly specified at 20 microinch (0.5 micrometre) Ra or smoother on the product-contact surface.

Q: Is ASTM A270 tubing pressure rated?
Tube is tested for soundness by hydrostatic or eddy current methods, and working pressure is calculated from outside diameter and wall thickness. For very high pressure duty, a pressure-piping specification would normally be used instead.

Q: Does A270 cover fittings and valves?
No. A270 covers tubing only. Hygienic fittings, valves and pumps are supplied to their own product standards, which is why matching the finish and dimension of tube and fitting is a routine purchasing check.
