What is ASTM A312 / ASME SA312?
ASTM A312 / ASME SA312 standards cover seamless, straight-seam welded, and heavily cold-welded austenitic stainless steel tubes for use in high-temperature and generally corrosive environments. This standard includes multiple steel grades, each with a chemical composition that must meet requirements, including C, Mn, P, S, Si, Cr, Ni, Mo, etc. All tubes must be heat-treated according to the specified heat treatment temperature and cooling/testing requirements. Furthermore, specified tensile strength and yield strength requirements must be met.
What is the difference between ASTM A312 and ASME SA312?
Application Scope: Although the technical requirements of the two are similar, ASTM A312 is more commonly used in general industrial applications, while ASME SA312 is specifically for pressure vessels and high-temperature piping systems that need to comply with ASME specifications.
What material is ASTM A312 equivalent to?
ASTM A312 is a specification for austenitic stainless steel pipes, and its equivalent materials depend on the specific grade (e.g., TP304, TP316). Equivalent standards include ASME SA312, which is essentially the same specification, and various international standards such as the DIN grade 1.4301 for TP304 and WERKSTOFF NR. 1.4401 for TP316, and the UNS grade S30400 for TP304 and S31600 for TP316.

ASTM A312 Heat Treatment
All pipes shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition in accordance with the required heat-treating temperature and cooling requirements, pipes shall be individually quenched in water or rapidly cooled by other means (direct quenched).
The pipe shall be free of scale and contaminating exogenous iron particles. Pickling, blasting, or surface finishing is not mandatory when the pipe is bright annealed.
What are the differences between ASTM A312 and ASTM A269?
ASTM A312 is suitable for high-temperature and generally corrosive environments, and can be used for seamless, welded, and heavily cold-worked pipe. ASTM A269, on the other hand, is suitable for general-purpose seamless or welded pipe, but its applicable pressure conditions are less stringent than A312. The main differences lie in their intended use, pressure rating, and requirements for mechanical strength and testing performance. A312 typically has more stringent requirements for high-stress environments.
