Why do premium chains use 420 stainless?
Heat-treated 420 (52-55 HRC) resists "chain stretch" 3x longer than plated chains – lasting 5,000km versus 2,000km. Solid stainless won't flake like plating, avoiding abrasive debris. Though 30% heavier, its wax-compatible surface reduces friction by 15% when properly lubricated.

When are nickel-plated chains practical?
For dry-climate riders needing lightweight options. The 5-8µm nickel layer provides sacrificial corrosion protection but wears off after 100 hours. Use wet lube exclusively – dry lubes accelerate plating loss. Replace when gold base metal shows through.

Cleaning without damaging?
420 chains: Remove, soak in citrus degreaser 20 mins, scrub with stiff brush, rinse and dry completely before relubing. Nickel chains: Wipe only with damp cloth – immersion degreasers strip plating. Never ultrasonic clean plated chains.

Lubrication schedule?
420 chains: Apply wax-based lube every 200km. Re-dip in molten wax every 500km. Nickel chains: Use wet lube weekly in dry conditions, after every ride in wet weather. Wipe excess to prevent grime buildup.

Measuring wear accurately?
Use chain checker tool monthly. Replace 420 chains at >0.75% stretch (12" pin-to-pin >12-1/16"). Nickel chains wear faster – replace at >0.5% stretch. Skipping under load indicates worn sprockets requiring full drivetrain replacement.
