EN 1.4401 (SUS316): EU Standard Stainless Steel OverviewDuplex 2205 vs SUS304: Strength & Durability Comparison630 (17-4 PH) vs 631 (17-7 PH) Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steels: Versatile Strength vs Cryogenic Toughness

Chromium Content

Rust resistance requires chromium. The composition of stainless steel 201 contains 4.5%-7.1% manganese at a chromium content of 16.0%-18.0%. Chromium contents of grade 304 are from 18.0% to 20.0%. This translates to higher Chromium content, which in turn means better rust protection.

When exposed to chromium, steel will form a passive oxide layer. Chemistry plus moisture don't touch it. Grade 304 has a PREN greater than 19. Grade 201's is below 17. From the metrics we can see that 304 generally does better under harsh environments. The choice is then left to you, depending on your analytical needs. When deciding, check the formula details too.
