Comparison of corrosion performance between Grade 2 titanium alloy and 304L stainless steel.

AISI 304 stainless steel is an economical and durable iron-based alloy suitable for general purposes, easy to machine, and offers good corrosion resistance. Grade 2 titanium is a pure metal with an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, outstanding corrosion resistance (especially in seawater/chemical environments), and higher heat resistance, but it is significantly more expensive and more difficult to machine. For economical everyday needs, choose 304 stainless steel; for aerospace, marine, medical, or high-performance applications where lightweight and extreme corrosion resistance are critical, choose Grade 2 titanium.

Is titanium stronger than 304 stainless steel?

Heavy-duty steel parts
For example, the yield strength of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy is in the range of 800-900 MPa, which is indeed stronger than 304 stainless steel (approximately 170-310 MPa), but weaker than high-carbon steel (such as AISI 1045, with a yield strength of approximately 450-530 MPa).

304 Stainless Steel

AISI 304 stainless steel is a general-purpose austenitic stainless steel known for its good corrosion resistance, excellent formability, and weldability. Its core composition is a chromium-nickel ratio (approximately 18% chromium, 8% nickel), and it performs stably in mild atmospheric conditions, freshwater, and various oxidizing media. It is widely used in kitchenware, food equipment, architectural decoration, household appliances, and general industrial components, making it the most commonly used and cost-effective stainless steel grade. However, it is not suitable for high-concentration chloride or strong reducing acid environments.

Grade 2 titanium is the most widely used grade of pure titanium (commercially pure titanium), belonging to the α-type titanium alloy. Its core characteristics include excellent corrosion resistance (especially in chloride environments), good overall mechanical properties (a balance of strength and ductility), and excellent cold formability and weldability. It is mainly used in chemical equipment (heat exchangers, reactors), marine engineering, medical implants, non-load-bearing aerospace structures, and consumer goods. It is the "industrial workhorse" material among pure titanium grades, balancing performance, processability, and cost-effectiveness.

AISI 304 Stainless Steel (Iron Alloy)
Advantages: Cost-effective, widely available, excellent durability, good toughness, easy to weld/machine, good corrosion resistance (less prone to rusting than carbon steel).
Disadvantages: Heavier than titanium, poorer corrosion resistance in harsh environments (seawater, strong corrosive chemicals).
Best uses: Kitchenware, architectural decoration, food processing, general structural components where weight is not a critical factor.

Grade 2 Titanium (Pure Metal)
Advantages: Approximately 45% lighter than steel, excellent strength-to-weight ratio, excellent corrosion resistance (virtually immune to rust/seawater corrosion), high temperature resistance, good biocompatibility (suitable for medical implants).
Disadvantages: Significantly more expensive, difficult to process/manufacture, lower thermal conductivity (lower heat transfer efficiency).
Best uses: Aerospace (airframes, engines), high-performance cars/bicycles, marine hardware, medical implants (bones, dental), chemical processing.

Generally, 304L stainless steel is not suitable for applications involving nitric acid because it can undergo severe uniform or intergranular corrosion. Grade 2 titanium is suitable for the handling and production of nitric acid. It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance to nitric acid at temperatures below the boiling point.

At boiling temperatures, Grade 2 titanium may experience accelerated corrosion in nitric acid. However, this corrosion is closely related to the purity of the nitric acid. Furthermore, the corrosion products of titanium (titanium ions, Ti⁴⁺) inhibit further corrosion. This inhibitory effect improves the corrosion resistance of Grade 2 titanium to concentrated nitric acid at high temperatures. A comparison of the corrosion resistance of Grade 2 titanium and 314L stainless steel in 90% boiling nitric acid is shown below.
