What Is EN 1.4401 Stainless Steel?
EN 1.4401 is the European standard designation for 316 stainless steel, containing around 17% chromium, 12% nickel, and 2–2.5% molybdenum. The addition of molybdenum significantly enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-rich and acidic environments.
EN 1.4401 Chemical Composition (EN 10088-1)
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.07 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 2.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.045 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.015 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 16.5–18.5 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 10.0–13.0 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 2.00–2.50 |
| Nitrogen (N) | ≤ 0.11 |
EN 1.4401 Mechanical Properties
| Property | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength (Rm) | 500–700 MPa |
| Yield Strength (Rp0.2) | ≥ 200 MPa |
| Elongation (A5) | ≥ 40% |
| Hardness (HB) | ≤ 215 |
| Working Temp Range | -196°C to 550°C |
What's the difference between EN 1.4401 and 1.4404?
EN 1.4404 (AISI 316L) has a lower carbon content (≤0.03%), making it more resistant to intergranular corrosion after welding. Use 1.4404 for welded pressure vessels and sanitary pipelines.
Is EN 1.4401 suitable for seawater?
It offers good resistance in brackish and mildly salty waters, but for long-term exposure to high-chloride seawater, duplex grades like 1.4462 (2205) are better.
Is EN 1.4401 magnetic?
No. In the annealed condition, EN 1.4401 is non-magnetic, but may develop slight magnetism after cold working.
Can EN 1.4401 be used for food contact?
Yes. It is safe and hygienic for food-grade and pharmaceutical equipment, especially in environments with cleaning chemicals.
