Description

Grade 316 stands as the industry benchmark for general corrosion resistance in challenging environments, distinguished by its key molybdenum addition. As a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel, it delivers superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance compared to 304 series grades, making it indispensable in chloride-rich environments. With 16.0-18.5% chromium, 10.0-14.0% nickel, and 2.0-3.0% molybdenum, it forms a stable austenitic structure that remains non-magnetic at room temperature. Its balanced mechanical properties-including excellent tensile strength, toughness, and formability-make it suitable for both low and elevated temperature service. Unlike specialized high-temperature alloys, 316 excels in marine, chemical processing, and coastal architectural applications where corrosion resistance is paramount.

Chemical Composition (wt%)

C ≤ 0.08, Cr: 16.00-18.50, Ni: 10.00-14.00, Mo: 2.00-3.00, Mn ≤ 2.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength ≥ 520 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 205 MPa, Elongation ≥ 40%, Hardness ≤ 215 HB

Advantages

Superior chloride corrosion resistance; excellent toughness; good formability and weldability; non-magnetic; versatile across marine, chemical, and architectural sectors; cost-effective performance balance.
