Description
Grade 409 is a ferritic stainless steel primarily composed of chromium, with a lower chromium content (10.5-11.75%) compared to other stainless steel grades, making it a cost-effective option for applications where moderate corrosion resistance is sufficient. It is a titanium-stabilized grade, which helps prevent intergranular corrosion and improves its weldability and formability. Unlike austenitic stainless steels (such as 304 or 316), 409 is magnetic and has good thermal conductivity, making it suitable for high-temperature applications. It is widely used in automotive and industrial sectors due to its balance of affordability, durability, and resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures. While it does not offer the same level of corrosion resistance as austenitic grades, it performs well in dry or mildly corrosive environments and is easy to fabricate through welding, bending, and forming processes.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.08, Cr: 10.50-11.75, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Ti: 6×C-0.70, Ni ≤ 0.50
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 415 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 205 MPa, Elongation ≥ 20%, Hardness ≤ 183 HB
Advantages
Cost-effective compared to austenitic stainless steels; good high-temperature oxidation resistance; excellent weldability and formability; magnetic; easy to machine; titanium-stabilized to prevent intergranular corrosion; suitable for mass production.
Applications
Automotive exhaust systems, catalytic converters, mufflers, heat shields, industrial ductwork, furnace parts, agricultural equipment, and general-purpose components in mild corrosive environments.
Equivalent Grades
AISI 409, UNS S40900, EN 1.4512, GB 022Cr11Ti
