Description

Grade SUS316L is the low-carbon variant of SUS316, optimized to prevent intergranular corrosion after welding. With carbon content limited to ≤0.03%, it avoids chromium carbide precipitation during welding, maintaining excellent corrosion resistance in welded joints without post-weld heat treatment. It inherits the molybdenum-enhanced corrosion performance of SUS316, making it highly reliable in chloride, chemical, and marine environments-far superior to 201 and even SUS304L. Unlike SUS316, SUS316L is the preferred choice for heavy welded fabrications where long-term corrosion resistance is essential, as it eliminates the need for post-weld annealing. It is widely used in industries where equipment integrity after welding is critical, providing a balance of corrosion resistance and processability.

Chemical Composition (wt%)

C ≤ 0.03, Cr: 16.00-18.50, Ni: 10.00-14.00, Mo: 2.00-3.00, Mn ≤ 2.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength ≥ 480 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 175 MPa, Elongation ≥ 40%, Hardness ≤ 215 HB

Advantages

Excellent post-weld corrosion resistance; superior to SUS316 in welded conditions; retains high pitting resistance in chloride media; non-magnetic; good formability and weldability; more corrosion-resistant than 201 and SUS304L.

Applications

Chemical pipelines, tanks, marine equipment, medical devices, pharmaceutical systems, welded pressure parts, and components in harsh corrosive environments.

Equivalent Grades

AISI 316L, UNS S31603, EN 1.4404, GB 022Cr17Ni12Mo2
