Grade SUS420J1/J2 Stainless Steel

Description

Grade SUS420J1 and SUS420J2 are medium-carbon martensitic stainless steels, designed for applications requiring a balance of hardness, wear resistance, and moderate corrosion resistance. Both grades contain 12.0-14.0% chromium, providing better corrosion resistance than SUS410 and SUS410L, and are magnetic due to their martensitic structure. The key difference between SUS420J1 and SUS420J2 lies in their carbon content: SUS420J1 has a carbon range of 0.16-0.25%, while SUS420J2 has a slightly higher carbon content of 0.16-0.28%, resulting in slightly higher hardness and wear resistance for J2. Both grades can be heat-treated (quenched and tempered) to achieve high hardness and are easy to polish, making them suitable for cutting tools, precision components, and decorative applications. Unlike austenitic grades, they are not recommended for severe chloride or marine environments but perform well in mild corrosive conditions.

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength ≥ 620 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 450 MPa, Elongation ≥ 12%, Hardness ≤ 223 HB (annealed); Tensile Strength ≥ 1050 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 750 MPa, Elongation ≥ 8%, Hardness ≥ 302 HB (heat-treated, both grades)

Advantages

Good hardness and wear resistance; excellent polishability; heat-treatable; magnetic; better corrosion resistance than SUS410 series; balanced performance for general-purpose wear-resistant applications.

Applications

Knives, blades, cutlery, molds, valves, bearings, surgical tools, decorative components, and precision mechanical parts requiring wear resistance and moderate corrosion protection.
