Why 2205 for commercial vessel shafts?
2205 provides 450 MPa yield strength - 3x bronze alloys. PREN 35 resists seawater pitting at 8 knots cruising speed. Cost-effective for shafts up to 300mm diameter handling 10 MW power.
When super duplex 2507 is justified?
For high-speed (>25 knot) naval vessels where cavitation erosion dominates. 2507's 550 MPa yield strength allows smaller shaft diameters. PREN >42 prevents crevice corrosion in stern tube bearings.
Cavitation damage mitigation?
Induction hardening of shaft surfaces to 500 HB. Optimize propeller geometry to reduce bubble collapse energy. Apply WC-Co plasma spray on leading edges (0.5mm thickness).
Critical stern tube design?
Length-to-diameter ratio <4:1 prevents whirling vibration. Sea water lubricated bearings require 0.2mm clearance. Aft seal systems must exclude abrasive sediments.
Failure analysis protocol?
Ferrite content verification (35-55% for 2205). SEM examination of erosion patterns. Residual stress mapping of fracture surfaces. Ultrasonic testing for stress corrosion cracks.
