304H Stainless Steel Pipe Characteristics and Features
Unlike 304L, Type 304H has a higher carbon content, making this steel more suitable for applications where high temperatures are present. It is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloy, and the higher the carbon content, the higher the tensile strength and yield strength. The recommended material is used in ASME pressure vessels in working service above 815°C due to the heat resistance properties of this grade.

The higher carbon content of 304H increases its strength, so the ASTM A213 tensile strength and yield strength of 304H are greater than 304L. 304H has greater short-term and long-term creep strength than 304L at temperatures up to 500°C, and 304H is more resistant to sensitization than 304L. In ASME pressure vessels used above 815°C, the carbon content of 304H must be 0.04% to 0.1%. 304H is required in such applications.

Alloy 304H is most commonly used in refineries. It is also used for stainless steel reheater tubes and superheater tubes for boilers, heat exchanger tubes, condenser tubes, piping, cooling towers, steam exhaust and power plants. It is also found in fertilizer and chemical plants.

Benefits of using 304H stainless steel pipe

Higher carbon content gives the material better heat resistance

Higher tensile strength and yield strength

Higher short-term and long-term creep strength
