What is S31803 material standard?

S31803 (often referred to as 2205 duplex or DIN 1.4462) is a standard designation for a 22% Chromium, 3% Molybdenum, 5–6% Nickel, nitrogen-alloyed duplex stainless steel. It is characterized by a 50:50 austenitic-ferritic microstructure, offering roughly double the yield strength of conventional 300-series stainless steel, along with superior resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

What is S32205 duplex stainless steel?

S32205 (also known as Alloy 2205 or EN 1.4462) is a nitrogen-enhanced chromium-nickel-molybdenum duplex stainless steel featuring a microstructure composed of a mixture of austenite and ferrite. Compared to standard austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316, this material possesses approximately twice the yield strength, along with superior resistance to pitting corrosion and enhanced resistance to stress corrosion cracking, making it suitable for applications in marine engineering, oil and gas, and chemical processing.

What is equivalent to Duplex 2205 steel?

Duplex 2205 (commonly UNS S31803 or S32205) is most accurately equated to DIN/EN 1.4462 (X2CrNiMoN22-5-3) and ASTM F51. It is a versatile, high-strength stainless steel with twice the yield strength of austenitic steels (like 316L) and excellent corrosion resistance.

Are S31803 and S32205 the same material?

S31803 represents the original composition of 2205 duplex stainless steel, whereas S32205 is a subsequently introduced, improved, high-nitrogen version. S32205 specifies higher minimum content requirements for chromium (22% vs. 21%), molybdenum (3.0% vs. 2.5%), and nitrogen (0.14% vs. 0.08%) compared to S31803.

S31083 VS. S32205 duplex stainless steel: Chemical Composition

S32205 has higher minimum limits for Cr, Mo, and N to ensure better corrosion resistance.

S32205 stainless Physical Properties

Both grades share the same physical characteristics.

Property Value (at 20°C)
Density  7.8 g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³)
Modulus of Elasticity  200 GPa (29.0 x 10⁶ psi)
Thermal Conductivity  19.0 W/m·K (at 100°C)
Thermal Expansion  13.0 µm/m·°C (0-100°C)

Is 2205 duplex steel magnetic?

Yes. Unlike common austenitic stainless steels like 304 or 316 which are non-magnetic, 2205 (both S31803 and S32205) has a 50% ferritic microstructure, which makes it strongly ferromagnetic.

Are S31803 and S32205 Interchangeable?

S32205 can always be used as a substitute for S31803, as it exceeds the minimum requirements of S31803 across all specifications. However, S31803 cannot always be used to replace S32205. If project specifications strictly mandate the use of S32205,typically due to exposure to highly corrosive environments-then standard S31803 material may not be acceptable, unless the specific chemical analysis results for that particular heat batch satisfy the higher minimum alloy composition requirements established for S32205.
